When natural and safe ingredients become unstable or contaminated it can be likened to the use of unsafe ingredients, the abuse of steroids, and the abuse of hydroquinone to formulate a product.

Because all products formulated with the aforementioned ingredients are unsafe for topical use.

With this in mind, follow these 2 tips to avoid this unsafe act.

1. Until you are financially ready to conduct proper laboratory cosmetic testing on your products the use of packaging that allows your clients to dip their hands into the product or unintentionally add more water to the product should be avoided or limited. E.g jars.

By right, a product is not fit for sale without cosmetic testing, this is to ensure the safety of the end-users.

If possible, work on the viscosity of your products and avoid the use of jars to package your products until full testing is carried out on that product.

2. Invest in a good pH meter. Once a particular ingredient is not in its right pH and starts to oxidize it affects the entire product making it unsafe for use.

Formulating with ingredients like L-ascorbic acid and all of its derivatives, resorcinols, kojic acid, MSK, Deoxy arbutin, high concentrations of acid in leave-on products, etc should not be joked with when it comes to pH adjustment.

1. First and most importantly, ensure that the final pH of your product is higher than the PKA value of the acids contained in the formula.

2. Ensure to use healing and soothing ingredients, to avoid the skin trying to soothe itself. Because if the skin soothes itself it will produce more melanin which in turn will result in reverse skin darkening.

3. Use barrier repair ingredients to help the skin build and repair itself to avoid skin thinning.

Always consider these points when using acids, especially if there will be used daily, but if it's not meant to be used daily you can ignore the first point.
