HEY BEAUTIFULS! So as you can tell by the title, I’m going to talk about the different hair types that exist. “What is my hair type? Is it important to know my hair type?” These are some of the frequently asked questions when it comes to knowing your hair type. I can tell you one thing…..knowing your hair type can determine a lot about your daily styling and hair care regimen. It’s a stepping stone for understanding what types of products and styles will give you desired results.

Below I have divided the different hair types into 4 categories (please see photo to get a visual image of what each hair type looks like):

STRAIGHT HAIR

1, 1A, 1B, 1C: Has no curl pattern and is naturally straight from root to tip. Very shiny and oily (due to the lack of curl pattern).

WAVY HAIR

2A: This hair type is naturally wavy and it’s not as oily as Type 1 hair due to its “S” shape pattern. Too much product will cause the hair to be easily weighed down. Another fact is that it can alternate between straight and curly styles.

2B: Curls are more defined and tightly drawn, resembles that “beachy” wave. Prone to frizz.

2C: This hair type is made up of a mixture of waves and curls that are tightly drawn. It is the frizziest of all the type 2 hair.

CURLY HAIR

3A: Naturally curly pattern and shaped like an “S”, doesn’t require excess manipulation or hair styling product to define curls, may be prone to frizz, full bodied, damage prone.

3B: Curls are moderately defined, extremely frizzy without the use of styling aids, lack of proper care results in dull curls, too much product may weigh down hair.

3C: Tight curl pattern, strands are closely packed together.

KINKY HAIR

4A: Tightly curled hair, curls are perfectly cylindrical, hair is quite fine and fragile, it is wiry or springy by nature, has an “S” pattern when stretched.

4B: Has a “z” shape pattern and has a more fluffy cottony appearance, hair bends with very sharp angles, hair strand is highly susceptible to dryness and breakage.

4C: “Z” shape pattern, show little to no defined sections of hair, looks similar to 4B hair type only it is more tightly coiled, hair practices such as twisting (twist out) or braiding (braid out) creates curls, texture ranges from thin to wiry and coarse, known for shrinkage.

Please remember that hair type looks at the amount of curl and thickness of your hair strand. To some naturals finding your hair type may be easy peezy while for others it may be real challenging. It is normal to have more than one hair type. Knowing what your hair type is can help you out so much in finding what suits your hair, the practices that you should and shouldn’t do.
