*DANGEROUS CHEMICALS IN CIRCULATION AS "HAND SANITIZERS"*

It has been reported in places that people reacted to some "hand sanitizers", and an unverified picture also showed burnt hands that were said to resulted from the use of "hand sanitizers".

Today, I confirmed the sources of some of the harmful substances being distributed to people in forms of hand sanitizers. I walked into a chemical store to enquire of a particular solvent. On getting there, I met nine (9) other persons who came to buy chemicals, while I waited for my turn, to get served, I observed that one of the customers asked for ethyl alcohol or isopropyl alcohol, but the vendor reportedly said that "they bought the remaining gallon yesterday morning, but I have *methanol*, they are all alcohol, ask this lady, pointing at another lady, she prepared her own hand sanitizers yesterday using methanol and now she's here to buy more, they finished buying all".... I shouted, remembering METHANOL POISONING, and asked him, "Oga, you mean you sold concentrated methanol (90%) to people, to use prepare hand sanitizers? And he replied, trying to educate me, "methanol is stronger than all of them, should be better used", what about the dangers that abound, especially when brought into a household that has children and its high flammability, he added, "well, so long as the business moves".

I threatened the lady, informed them that I am a Pharmacist, and claimed to be a member of an enforcement agency, she dropped the methanol, and left.

I moved to another chemical store, to observe what happens there. There, I found out that our local " manufacturers of hand sanitizers" do not have a single formula they employ in their mixtures, so long as it has a smell of alcohol in it, and whatever that gels.

I met two ladies who were discussing about the new price of aloe vera gel, while they looked discouraged in their planned business, the vendor suggested the use of *"nitrosol"* as a jelling agent in a hand sanitizer, and I asked him, how will that happen, and what happens to the alcohol concentration and availability, he replied "what do you mean by concentration? Do you mean, it will not be thick or dissolve? I got weak immediately, and the two ladies were expecting a solution to head-on with their business, when I told them that" they will end up preparing a solution that will not meet the purpose of its formulation (sterilization).

You have seen that you're either buying a preparation that does not contain/ or that may not release up to 60% alcohol on your palms when applied or you be buying a formulation that contains VERY DANGEROUS chemical constituents; in the name of HAND SANITIZERS!

In this panic buying and high demand for hand sanitizers, a lot of untrained individuals have turned themselves into manufacturers with no proper knowledge of chemicals and their associated hazards, should we ask if they know about NAFDAC certification?
