🗣️ Gov. Alex Otti on his involvement in Aba Geometric Power
“In 2010, Prof. Barth Nnaji visited me at First Bank, Lagos, where I was an Executive Director.
He needed the support of the bank to complete the project, the funding of which had unfortunately been stopped two years earlier by the bank that originally started it. That bank happened to be Diamond Bank.
After securing approval for an $85 million facility from First Bank of Nigeria, Geometric Power could not draw on the facility because it had become public knowledge that I would shortly resume as the Group Managing Director of Diamond Bank.
When I resumed at Diamond on March 1, 2011, I put together a team that restructured the challenged facility and resumed funding for the project through to completion.
By the time I left Diamond towards the end of 2014, the three General Electric turbines and the 27km gas pipeline were in place.
A combination of factors including ownership tussles over the Aba ring fence, the sale of the oil block from which the feed gas was to come to a new investor, and additional funding challenges conspired to delay project delivery for nearly 10 years.
Upon assumption of office on May 29, 2023, my team and I rolled up our sleeves and began working with Geometric to resolve the gas supply problem by directly interfacing with top management of NNPC. Today, we have gas flowing to the turbines.
As recorded in Romans 8:28, “All things work together for good to them that love God.”
I am therefore pleased that, 14 years down the line, God arranged everything such that the final resolution of all the issues and the firing of the turbines would happen when He had handed over the mantle of stewardship to me. May His name be glorified!”

A First Bank customer, Ojo Eghosa Kingsley, became involved in a major controversy after the bank mistakenly credited his account with ₦1.5 billion. Instead of notifying the bank and returning the funds, he diverted the money for personal use between June and November 2025.
He was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Benin City, and on 19 January 2026, he was arraigned before the Edo State High Court. Kingsley was charged with theft and fraud under the Edo State Criminal Law (2022).
Upon the reading of the charges, he pleaded guilty without hesitation. His counsel pleaded for leniency, citing his expression of remorse. However, the court delivered the following sentence:
•One year imprisonment or an option of a ₦5 million fine; and
•An order to refund the outstanding balance of ₦272,252,193.59 to First Bank.
Prior to the judgment, the EFCC had recovered ₦802,420,000 from Kingsley’s account, as well as from the accounts of his mother and sister, while the bank successfully reversed transactions totaling over ₦300 million.
In a dramatic turn of events, Kingsley informed the court that he preferred serving a prison sentence to refunding the remaining amount.
In effect, he openly chose incarceration over the repayment of ₦272 million.
