Did you know that you can eat Shea butter?

Yep, that’s right, Shea butter is not just a natural lotion, it’s also a food. In fact, Shea has a long history of being used as a cooking fat in Africa in place of, or in addition to Palm oil.

For many of the same reasons Shea is good to put on your skin, it’s also good to put in your body.

Antioxidants, essential fatty acids, vitamin E and the wondrous stability of this botanical fat make it a perfect candidate for eating.

Using sheabutter during pregnancy.

Shea butter has been shown to have a wide number of benefits for skin care, and helping to eliminate and prevent stretch marks is one of those benefits. While shea butter may not entirely rid your skin of stretch marks on its own, it can still be helpful in preventing the formation of more in the future. For example, by holding moisture in your skin and encouraging the production of collagen, our unrefined shea butter can help make your skin more elastic. This will help prevent stretch marks from forming by helping your skin to comfortably stretch and bounce back to its former shape and size. Additionally, the antioxidants found in raw shea butter can help make your skin healthier and smoother. They do this by protecting and maintaining the health of your skin cells, and fighting away free radicals that damage the structure of your skin.

Tips on choosing Shea Butter

Shea Butter is renowned for its anti-inflammatory and moisturising properties. But not all Shea Butter are created equal. What do you look out for when sourcing for good Shea Butter? Here are a few tips based on my personal experience.

Shea Butter Cream

What is available over most cosmetic counters and pharmacies is what would be called already made Shea Butter cream. Inside the beautiful packaging, one may think within it contains all Shea Butter. And when you try it, you can tell that it is a cream, a little thicker than lotion. It may have a nice fragrance and sometimes a little sweet smelling too.

Well, if Shea Butter comes in cream form, you can be quite sure it does not all contain Shea Butter and it has other ingredients in it.

Formulating a basic cream involves using water, butter, oil, emulsifying waxes, preservatives, colorants and other ingredients. Creams are formulated for easy application and it allows one to have a mix of different ingredients for its various properties. It is fine as long as the ingredients used are beneficial. But it is not good if the cream contains other undesirable ingredients.

Flip over the packaging, glance through the ingredients, and you will usually find that Shea Butter, sometimes labeled Butyrospermum parkii or Vitellaria paradoxa, is just one of the ingredient among the long list of other ingredients. And for some brands, percentage of Shea Butter is not known.

This does not mean creams are not good. They are fine as long as the ingredients used are beneficial harmless and natural (organic). Often, cosmetic products are likely to be named after the most exotic ingredient regardless of the amount used. This is just like naming a dish. Chefs like to name the dish after their most exotic ingredients.

Whatever it is, the intention is that you can become more aware of what goes inside that cream and not be misled by the label.

So the next time you hold up a container of cream labeled Shea Butter, know that it might not all contain 100% Shea Butter.

If you want the healing and moisturising properties of Shea Butter, it is advisable to go for 100% Shea Butter locally produced (contact AnB Shea Butter Express 08035860096 or 08033389785 ). Then again, there exist the refined and the unrefined version.

Refined Shea Butter

If it comes in white colour, you can be sure it is refined Shea Butter. It may be odourless or scented with fragrance depending on the companies. The texture feels a little waxy like a balm sometimes.

Why do they want to refine Shea Butter? Doing so removes the natural ivory or pale yellow colour of Shea Butter. Perhaps white colour looks more clinical and appealing? Rendering Shea Butter odourless would appeal to customers who prefer Shea Butter without its nutty scent. It also allows the cosmetic companies the option to add in fragrances and make the smell more appealing.

Refined Shea Butter often goes through a process of refining, bleaching, deodorising and/or degumming. It results in a colourless and odourless Shea Butter. In the process, some valuable nutrients and benefits are also significantly reduced as well.

Unrefined Shea Butter

If you want true healing and moisturising benefits of Shea Butter, it is advisable to go for unrefined Shea Butter, or sometimes called Raw Shea Butter. Unrefined, it retains all its valuable nutrients, that include Vitamins A, E, F, Cinnamates, Phytosterol and other phytonutrients, that are beneficial to your skin (contact AnB Shea Butter Express 08035860096 or 08033389785 )

Unrefined Shea Butter is usually handmade in the traditional way. Basic method involves drying the kernel of the Shea fruit, roasting, grinding, kneading by hand and boiling to extract the oil and cooling it to form Shea Butter.

Authentic Shea Butter is usually ivory or pale yellow in colour and it retains a nutty aroma and the smell appealing to many, its like smelling raw chocolate. And it is not that all surprising when you find out that Shea Butter is sometimes used as a substitute for cocoa butter in food recipes. Unrefined, It is solid and firm under room temperature but not hard and melts at a temperature around 38 degree celsius. It feels smooth and buttery and melts easily onto your body.

A little unrefined Shea Butter can keep your skin protected, moisturised and happy for longer hours without having to reapply it several times a day.

When I made my first batch of body butter. I think my life changed forever. Pleasant, sweet and cool, I have always wanted to try making it for a long time. I used to think it would be difficult and not work the way I wanted, but I was wrong.
I love creamy body lotions. Apart from the fact that I live in a climate that gets quite cold and dry in the harmattan, we just love them in my house. But two things have always bothered me. They can be quite expensive and also, full of ingredients that are less than desirable for the skin and health.
We often forget that our skin is the largest organ on our body and absorbs what we put on it. If you are using lotions and body butters with chemicals in them (fragrances, preservatives, color additives, etc.) be aware that your skin absorbs the chemicals, too. Not exactly desirable. I often just use simple organic oil on my skin after a shower but sometimes I want something a little more decadent. Body butters, made with pure oils and essential oils for fragrance are just the thing.
So I did some research on natural and organic oils and came up with something healthy and tolerant.
I measured out shea butter (You can get same high quality product from Angel n Bee shea butter express) and coconut oil, and melted them in my home-made double boiler. (If you don’t have a double boiler, make sure there is space for the steam to escape and you are using heat proof glass, something to prevent steam settling down on it as water when you melt, without directly frying the oil.)
My first try was to use rosemary as one of my scents. I didn’t have any organic extract rosemary essential oil so I added fresh rosemary as the oils were cooling. I also stirred in pure almond oil at this point. Once the oil was cool, I strained out the rosemary, added peppermint extract (just a few drops, note that peppermint is strong) and sweet orange essential oils and tried to whip the butter as instructed in other body recipes that I had researched. Nothing happened. I was about to give up and just let the oil harden when I had an idea.
I placed the oil mixture in room temperature and let it partially set up to a pap like consistency. At that point, I tried whipping it again in the kitchen mixer and, success! A beautiful body butter, so simple to make, smelling delicious and with a texture that was like clouds of silk, my shea butter had been worked to a wonderful fluffy cream suitable for my skin without the strong natural aroma of the shea.
This was my first attempt at shea butter body cream, I have since perfected the mixture content and worked out the perfect mixture and consistency that works for me it worked better than I could have hoped for and if you make this recipe as stated, it will work great for you too.
I have used sweet orange, lemon and lavender and different organic essential oils in my subsequent experiments. You can use the basic recipe and add your favorite essential oils. Just make sure they are organic and most importantly skin friendly!
I am sure I can help you with preparation methods and questions….. just ask them here.

i. You can use what ever oils you wish, IF YOU ARE ALLERGIC TO ANY OF THE ABOVE LISTED OILS, JUST REPLACE THEM WITH AN OIL THAT YOU ARE NOT ALLERGIC TO. Just be careful to know the contents, you can ask your skin care expert or dermatologist for expert advice.
ii. The chilling step is crucial. If you don’t chill it properly, it won’t whip or stay whipped. A little time in the freezer usually does the trick. Make sure you scrape down the sides before mixing, then store in reasonable cool temperature, if the weather is cool, room temperature is ok, if weather is hot, find a shady place in your room that gets a lot of air.
iii. Since this recipe does not contain any water, it will not mold. You should keep in a cool place but it does not have to be refrigerated.
iv. I have not done any research to know the exact shelf life but I know it will keep good for at least a few months…. plus. Just make enough for a few months at a time
v. The body butter melts as it goes on and gets a little oily but it still absorbs beautifully and quickly and leaves your skin very soft.
vi. You can order the shea butter from “Angel n Bee shea butter express” call now 08035860096 or 08033389785
You can also order homemade coconut oil from same address.
Other ingredients are quite easy to locate at your local whole foods, health food store, pharmacy or health care store.

Scented Shea Butter Lotion Recipe

An amazing perfumed homemade lotion! If you’re the person who loves scents, this shea butter lotion is for you! Check out the ingredients of this homemade lotion and their benefits for skin:
◦Orange blossom water – I’m extremely excited to be using orange blossom water, which is a popular Arab flavouring ingredient for both sweet and savory dishes! It’s got lots of beauty benefits for skin including: toning the skin, regulating sebum, cleansing skin, controlling acne and lots more.
◦Grapeseed oil – I’ll also be using grapeseed oil because I really like that it has a light consistency and helps enhance the moisturizing qualities of the other ingredients. It is a great moisturizing agent for those with dry skin and also has skin protective and healing qualities that keep germs, acne causing bacteria and pollutants away from the skin.
◦Sweet orange essential oil – This citrus essential oil has many skin healing properties including preventing premature aging, treating sensitive skin and fighting acne and pimples.

Ingredients
◦0.2 kg of raw shea butter (get it from Angel n Bee shea butter express)
◦4 tbsp of orange blossom water
◦5 drops of sweet orange essential oil
◦1 tsp of grapeseed oil

Directions
1.Melt the shea butter with the grapeseed oil using a double boiler.
2.Place the melted liquids in a blender/food processor and let it cool down completely. Keep it near an open window to speed things up.
3.Once cooled but not fully solid, turn on the food processor and while it’s running, slowly pour the orange blossom water into the open end (of the food processor). You’ll see the ingredients forming an emulsion and becoming a thick white lotion!
Alternatively, you can whisk the mix or beat it with an electric egg mixer.
4.Now add the drops of essential oil. After 3-5 minutes or once all ingredients are well incorporated, stop blending.
5.Transfer to a clean container. and store in room temperature. Enjoy!

Be careful with how much orange blossom water you add. Adding too much will not blend up the floral water and you’ll have to add more shea butter to get everything mixed.
Rememeber you can add any perfume or strong flavoured extract that is skin tolerant of your choice.
