TOPIC: PLACENTA
PLACENTA is a flat circular organ that originates from trophoblast of a fertilized egg that carry out the functions which the fetus is unable to perform for itself during intra-uterine life.
FUNCTIONS OF THE PLACENTA
RESPIRATIONS
Placenta is responsible for gaseous exchange in which the fetus receive oxygen from the maternal circulation and gives off carbon dioxide into the maternal blood with the help of the placenta.
NUTRITION
Placenta transfers all the nutrients necessary for fetal development, growth and survival such as glucose, amino acids, vitamins and minerals salts from mother's blood into the fetal blood.
EXCRETION
Placenta is responsible for all the metabolism that takes place in the fetal circulation and removal of waste products such as uric acid, area bilirubin and creatinine from fatal blood into mother's blood across the placenta.
STORAGE
Placenta helps to metabolize and store iron, fats, soluble vitamins and also glucose in form of glycogen and re converts it to glucose when required.
PROTECTION
Placenta acts as the first barrier in protecting the fetus from any infection or injury
Towards the end of the pregnancy anti bodies ie Immunoglobulin G(IgG) is transferred to the fetus to boost the immune system of the baby for the first three months after birth.
