What an incredible night🏆
I’m really honoured to have got my second international award!!🇬🇧🎨
After dedicating 22 years entirely to colour,
winning the International Category at means a lot to me than I can put into words.
This trophy carries incredible meaning and value for everything I’ve worked towards.
Being able to bring this trophy home to my team .hair .amsterdam makes it even more special.
My deepest respect and gratitude to my shooting crew and everyone involved with for creating such an inspiring platform.
And of course my biggest thank you goes to my wife who has been taking care of our four children while I’ve been away chasing this dream.
I couldn’t do this without you. Thank you as always,
and love you so much.
I'm still on the way,
It feels like my real career has only just begun in Europe.
"I have no scissors"
(One last thing I’d like to say-
My name is "MAKOTO", not "MAKOTA"🤪)

[Hair History Shapes Design]
When working with complex colour history,
the most important skill isn’t "technique"
It’s perspective.
Standing in front of a client with years of colour history, it’s easy to explain everything that went wrong.
To criticise previous work or point out every limitation.
But that never creates emotion.
It only leaves the client feeling disappointed about their own hair.
Our job as colourists or hairdressers is to help people love their own hair again.
Whether it’s years of colour history, like grey hair, or both.
Of course, we have a responsibility to be honest about what is and isn’t possible based on the current condition.
But the real question is this:
How do we choose to see that history?
As a problem?
Or as the perfect canvas for a unique design?
Complex history isn’t just a challenge.
It’s a guide.
If we learn to read it, it tells us exactly where the design should go.
Emotion begins with perspective.
Hope you love it

As long as I’m standing behind the chair,
my greatest source of energy will always be the smile on a happy client’s face.
That never changes, no matter where in the world I am.
Thank you for trusting me

[For Clients]
I’ve shared my thoughts in each slide,
so make sure to swipe through▶️
It’s one of the most important aspects of any hair colour session.
When it comes to colour correction on hair with a complex colour history,
it’s important to understand that the final result cannot be determined before bleaching.
This is because the colour we see on the surface does not always reflect the pigment that remains inside the hair.
Whether it’s permanent, demi-permanent, or semi-permanent colour, some level of pigment remains in the hair until that section is eventually cut away. The difference is simply how deeply the pigment sits within the hair structure and how easily it can be removed.
That’s why the first step is to bleach the hair and reveal its true colour history—almost like taking an X-ray.
Only then can we accurately assess the remaining pigment and decide on the best direction together.
In some cases, the residual pigment left behind from previous colour services may make the desired result difficult or even impossible to achieve in a single session.
If that happens, we’ll use the outcome of the first bleach as our guide and work together to determine the best possible path forward.
Of course, I will always do everything I can to help you achieve your desired colour.
But creating a specific colour is not my ultimate goal.
My real goal is your happiness.
I want you to feel excited about your hair every day until your next appointment. I want you to enjoy living with it, not just admire it on the day you leave the salon.
By having honest conversations about what is and isn’t possible, we can find the best solution together.

There is no failure in creative work.
There is no right or wrong.
What we need is the perspective to turn everything into inspiration.
This is true in education too.
The way we choose to see what didn’t go as planned often determines how much we grow from it.
Creativity has given me far more than hairdressing.
It has brought relationships, connections and opportunities to grow as a human being.
In salon work we face limitations every day.
Time, budgets, hair history, expectations and countless other conditions.
To create a process that is unique, meaningful and capable of moving people, I need moments where those limitations disappear.
Moments where I can return to the mindset of a child drawing freely on a blank sheet of paper.
That is what creative work means to me.

Three months into life in the Netherlands🇳🇱
I’ve realised that happiness isn’t something I chase.
It’s something I notice.
The biggest change hasn’t been my environment.
It’s been my priorities.
Family.
Health.
Meaningful work.
Small daily moments.
I’m grateful for all of it.
Making my 40s the best years yet😎
The second half of my career starts now — becoming a borderless colourist.

[Classic Never Fails]
No matter where you are in the world,
there will always be demand for the classics.
The colours that bring lasting satisfaction to our clients are rarely built on trends alone.
They are built on strong fundamentals refined through years of experience and intention.
The beauty of classic colour work is that it doesn’t shout for attention.
Instead, it quietly becomes more beautiful as the days go by, fitting naturally into a client’s lifestyle.
The goal of great salon work is not to do something nobody has ever seen before.
It is to create a meaningful difference through the techniques, principles, and craftsmanship that everyone knows, yet few truly master.
Classic never fails.

[Different Perspectives Around the World]
For example,
there are many different interpretations of "Balayage" around the world.
In some countries,
balayage became known as the name of an application technique.
In others, it became popular as the name of a
finished look.
Japan falls into the latter category.
Because of this, both hairdressers and clients often have their own understanding of what balayage means.
What I want to share is not what is right or wrong.
Because the name itself is not the most important thing.
What matters most is aligning the understanding between the hairdresser and the client.
In many cases, the name of a technique or the specific skills we use are not what matters most to the client.
Even when a client asks for a balayage, what they have in mind may not be what a hairdresser would technically define as balayage.
In those moments, our job is not to tell them that they are wrong.
Our job is to understand what they mean when they say “balayage.”
(Of course, this isn’t limited to balayage)
Creating that shared understanding is,
in my opinion, the most important part of the consultation process between clients and hairdressers.
Thanks for coming and trusting me

[Hue・Value・Saturation]
Hair colour design is created through the control of three elements:
Hue.
Value.
Saturation.
This is a universal principle no matter where you are in the world.
The formula behind creating a specific colour is not magic.
It’s a logical discipline much closer to mathematics and chemistry.
In this colour design,
I worked within a single hue family while creating variation through value and saturation.
I want clients to experience colour as if it were like magic.
But the truth is that colour isn’t magic.
It’s science.
