🤔Have you ever noticed how difficult it can be to work in the weekend?

In the Netherlands most people are enjoying a sunny Pentecost long weekend. However, some of us are working…

It made me wonder. . what is the cost of working during non-standard work time (weekend/holidays) and what is the affect on performance?

👉Research shows that working on non-standard hours undermines employees’ desire to engage in work out of interest, enjoyment, and meaningfulness - that is, intrinsic motivation (Giurge & Woolley, 2022).

☝️So what can you do to keep intrinsic motivation and consequently work persistence high if working on the weekends is inevitable?

✅You can preserve intrinsic motivation for your work by changing the way you think: rather than considering better uses for your time (eg. going out for a drink, relaxing at the beach) you can consider the benefits of working.

❌However, lets not be encouraged to work outside standard work time since this can harm productivity and wellbeing in the long-run.

❔What do you think? Is working outside the standard hours a great way for more work flexibility or a liability for our intrinsic motivation, thus work persistence?

What do you do to keep your team happy and healthy?

It’s become increasingly clear that we all have to develop smarter strategies for hybrid or remote work.

👉 Lead by example.
Your team will follow what you do, not what you say.

1️⃣ don’t send your messages outside of working time.

2️⃣Meetings are great for things like brainstorming for example. But often we find ourself in a back-to-back day filled with too many meetings. This can lead to burnout and is something to re-think as a team leader.

3️⃣ Make sure well-being is part of your hybrid culture.

What could we add to this list?

The research is clear: we are influenced by the people around us.

But what does this mean for our health? How can we use this knowledge to our advantage and create influence?

👉 If you want to create positive social influence, be a good role model and lead by example.

Your behavior will have an impact on those around you. If your team members see that you're making healthy choices - like for example prioritizing sleep and eating a healthy lunch - they'll be more likely to do so as well.

Think about it.

One of the most critical things in life - and yet never taught in school - is choosing where to direct your attention.

Two ✌️effective habit hacks!

1️⃣ keep it small
Beware of ambition! It’s great to dream big, but the way to achieve big is to start small — through micro habits. Micro habits are small components of a larger habits.

😁 try this: I want to read more. I will start by reading 10 minutes (or 5 pages) after waking up on weekdays.

This can feel ridiculously small - but this is more achievable and it works like a charm!

💭Only imagine where you will stand in 365 days if you accomplish to stick to your micro habits ,..

2️⃣ habit stacking
Place a new intention next to an existing and consolidate them.

👉For example; I’ll read 10 minutes (or 5 pages) in my book after rising BEFORE I brush my teeth.

As rising is a trigger for brushing your teeth, you can use this to your advantage. By using existing triggers it’s easier to incorporate the new intention as a habit.

🤪We are all well acquainted to it,.. having intentions and after two weeks your motivation is decreasing.

There are many more tricks to habit forming 🙂

👉Don’t waste your time any more and start by doing it right.

It's time for a break.

Do you ever take the time to do nothing?

I mean, really. Do nothing. Not check your email or LinkedIn. Not even read a book or listen to music or watch TV. Just sit and think.

Scientific research suggests that taking a (short) break from your busy schedule can be beneficial in a number of ways.

👉For starters, busyness is not a virtue. Stress increases activity in the amygdala of the brain, which is responsible for emotional processing, while reducing activity in the hippocampus, which is responsible for cognitive function. This means that if you're under stress, it's harder for you to make good decisions.

👉In addition, research shows that being bored actually makes us more creative. This might seem counterintuitive at first because we usually think of boredom as something negative: "I'm bored." But when we take time away from our busy agenda and let our minds wander freely, we can make new connections in the brain and get to some really interesting ideas and insights. 🧠

👉Mice studies have show that silence supports the growth of brain cells in the hippocampus, important for learning and memory. [PMID: 24292324]

🚀If you're working remotely, it's easy to find yourself in a day with back-to-back meetings with little time to process things.
To get around this, schedule blank space in your calendar every day. This is not a waste of time but a great productivity tool!

When I work with business professionals living abroad, I notice they often feel alone.

😔 Dealing with loneliness at any stage of our lives can be really tough. 🧠

Arriving alone in a (pretty much individualised) city like Amsterdam isn't easy, especially when the team is often working from home. And actually Homo sapiens is made to be together. Socialisation is therefore super important!

⚠️If you are, or know someone that is, feeling lonely.. here are 3 useful ways to change it.

1️⃣ Talk to your friends and family back home. Research has shown that talking by phone brings more joy than texting by increasing the hormone oxytocine.

2️⃣ Volunteer at something in your new home town.

3️⃣ Join a like minded group. Rediscover an activity that brings you joy. E.g. do you like a team sport? This is a great way to socialise and take care of yourself physically.

Do you find this kind of information useful? Let me know by liking or saving this post for later. 🫶

The future of medicine is one where we understand that all body systems connect. Would you agree? 👩‍⚕️

is the study of the connection between our brain, our immune system and hormones.

⚡️The discipline is based on the understanding that unbalanced energy distribution drives chronic pathologies.

Even emotions and thoughts changes energy distribution in the body on biochemical level and therefore our well-being is affected.

For me, the part is the most interesting - because when we get into the mind of people, magic is about to happen ✨
