Our GreenCycl Lustrum Symposium from last Friday was a big success! With nearly 200 participants, an exciting Research and Public Award, and a thought-provoking panel discussion, this was truly our best edition yet.
A special congratulations to Bas de Blocq van Scheltinga for winning the Research Award, and to Storm Chabot, Andres Hunt, Roel Horeman, and Thomas Anker of theAdLap initiative for taking home the Public Award! Tim Horeman and I posted a banner-poster every day before the symposium and would like to thank all researchers, presenters and students for their contribution!
One of the presentations was the re-engineering of the 10R-ladder into a more inclusive circular model, where no R-strategy is left behind. Curious to learn more? Check out the presentation here: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/384687630_The_Circular_healthcare_economy_'From_surgical_waste_to_medical_products'_Sustainable_strategies_for_a_circular_healthcare_Modifying_the_10R_ladder_for_effective_circular_strategies
(doi:10.13140/RG.2.2.32538.45763)
Thanks to Talitha Hoppe, Rebecca Banens and Jan Carel Diehl being session leaders, and to Bruno Bruins and Hayke Veldman for your valuable insights during the panel. Also Renewi, KLS Martin Group, and Bergman Clinics thank you for your inspiring talks on sustainability in industry.
And, of course, our gratitude goes to Nieuwe of Littéraire Sociëteit De Witte for hosting us! Here's to many more successful editions!

As 5th teaser for our upcoming GreenCycl Lustrum Symposium, Tim Horeman and I decided to publish one of the banner-poster submissions every day. We address a special topic related to the reuse (and recycling potential) of surgical waste streams.
Recycling is often misunderstood as having lower potential on the R-ladder, yet its impact is far more significant than many realize. Literature shows that recycling just 1 kg of medical plastic waste can reduce CO2 emissions by an astonishing 3 kg. Beyond reducing waste, recycling fosters independence by transforming waste into valuable raw materials, lessening our reliance on external sources, poor working conditions and countries far away. At our symposium, we will unveil an alternative approach to the R-ladder—one that embraces all R-steps equally. This poster showcases the revolutionary process of converting blue wrap into the world’s first CE-certified medical device under the MDR: the GOJack. The GO Jack is more than just a product; it is a symbol for achieving a truly sustainable society.
