I genuinely had to read the email a few times.

To be in the running for one award would have been incredible, but four?! Especially alongside so many insanely talented women and amazing businesses from around New Zealand… I’m feeling very, very grateful.

When I opened Central Skin Studio last year, I obviously had big dreams for what I wanted this little clinic to become, but moments like this still feel a bit surreal. And now having Emma beside me, watching the studio grow and getting to do what we love every day makes it even more special.

And a HUGE thank you to everyone who took the time to vote for us for People’s Choice. Knowing that one came from you guys makes that finalist spot feel extra special 🥹

No idea what will happen when we head to Christchurch for the awards next month, but for now I’m just going to enjoy this one.

Have you ever noticed mottled, reddish brown pigmentation on the sides of the neck, often alongside visible blood vessels and a change in skin texture?

This is called poikiloderma, and fragrance is usually one of its primary causes.
Poikiloderma of Civatte is a photosensitive reaction.

When fragrance ingredients, particularly from perfumes or fragranced skincare, are exposed to sunlight on the skin, a phototoxic or photoallergic reaction can occur.

The resulting damage presents as mottled pigmentation, redness, visible blood
vessels, and changes in skin texture on the areas most exposed, typically the sides of the neck, the decolletage, and areas where perfume is commonly applied.

This is one of the reasons Prologic specifically advises clients if they have to spray perfume, spray it on their clothes, not their skin.

It’s one of the more visible long term consequences of fragrance use that is rarely connected back to its cause.

If you have unexplained pigmentation or texture change on the neck or decolletage, the first question worth asking is: what have you been applying there, and does it contain fragrance?

Fragrance might make your skincare smell beautiful… but your skin may not feel the same way.

Many fragrance ingredients are chemically reactive. When they’re exposed to oxygen and UV light, they can begin to oxidise — changing their chemical structure in the process… this is happening every time you open a jar, apply your product or step outside 😳

Two common examples are limonene, often associated with citrus, and linalool, commonly found in lavender and other essential oils. As these compounds oxidise, they can form substances that are more likely to trigger irritation or allergic contact dermatitis.

And this is where it gets interesting: sensitisation can develop over time.

You might use a fragranced product for months or even years, without noticing a problem.
But repeated exposure can eventually contribute to the immune system recognising a particular ingredient as an allergen, and suddenly the product you’ve “always been fine with” isn’t so fine anymore.

This is one of the reasons we look beyond whether a product is natural, smells lovely, or feels nice when you apply it.

For us, skincare is about what supports the skin long term — particularly when we’re working with sensitive, reactive or barrier impaired skin.

Sometimes, less really is more and is a big reason why Prologic Skincare avoid using fragrance.

Your skin doesn’t need to keep up with the latest trend.

It needs consistency, the right support, and products chosen for your skin — not someone else’s.

A product can be viral, expensive, beautifully packaged and have hundreds of glowing reviews… but that doesn’t necessarily mean your skin needs it or that it is even formulated in a way to support your skin.

More isn’t always better, and constantly introducing new products can sometimes be the very thing keeping your skin from progressing.

Good skin takes time. Support the barrier, work with the skin rather than against it, and give your routine the consistency it needs to actually do its job.

What does Prologic use, if we aren’t using silicones?

Prologic does not use any silicones across its entire product range. In their place,
every formulation uses ingredients that are physiologically compatible with the
skin's own barrier structure.

Skin identical lipids: ceramides, cholesterol, and free fatty acids that integrate
with the stratum corneum's lamellar structures rather than sitting on top of
them.

Physiological oils: rice bran, jojoba, macadamia, and plant-derived squalane,
chosen because their fatty acid profiles are closely aligned with the skin's own
sebum composition.

Natural film formers: phospholipids and lecithin, which create a smooth,
consistent texture without occlusive film formation.

Humectant complexes: glycerin, sodium lactate, and hyaluronate, combined
with lipids for balanced barrier hydration.

The difference is not just what is in the bottle. It is what those ingredients do once they are on the skin.
