To be Q***r and African is a beautiful and powerful thing. It goes beyond our physical bodies and who we like to be sexually intimate with. Q***rness, even though an English word - is deeply embedded in the identity of who we are as Africans. We may have lost some of our language for this through colonialism but reclaiming it in English doesn’t make it any less African in its essence. We have always existed and we will continue to. Whether you acknowledge and accept us or not !
No matter how much you try to oppress us, suppress us, restrict us, abuse us, deliver us from ‘evil’ or kill us. We will continue to be here and we will continue to be reborn as the Ancestors that we are.
To be Q***r means we live beyond colonial standards and structures, it means we love cosmically and ancestrally. To be Q***r means we express through, within and way far beyond gender norms and the binaries of what it means to be a ‘man’ or ‘woman’, ‘male’ or ‘female’. To be Q***r means we do need to live based on the assignment or restriction of our genitalia. To be Q***r and African means we are gatekeepers of the spirit realms and powerful healers.
To be Q***r and African is one of the most beautiful things you can be in existence and it should always always be celebrated in its fullest capacity. May we remember we are valued and loved. May we remember to value and love ourselves over and over again. Àṣẹ
A great gift for yourself or a loved one 💜🌀✨

Children are important. They are our future ancestors and the world we create for them now is what they will be left with. Children in Eastern DRC 🇨🇩 are extremely vulnerable not only because of war and genocide but because of the lack of systems in place by those in authority.
Recently in Bukavu, 29 children have passed away by fire while at school and around 25 were left injured. A tragedy that is all too common and could be avoided. Our heart goes out to families that have lost their young ones and may the souls of those children rest in divine peace.
We are grateful to partner with Bel Avenir, a network of youth that support the beautiful children of Congo by facilitating workshops and events such as visiting schools and supplying resources that are needed for everyday learning. Schools are meant to be safe spaces for children where they are held and nurtured in knowledge and creativity.
To support their mission you can buy our artwork! ‘Mawa Mpe’ (Sorrow) is an art print by Janina Nana Yaa. Inspired by a poem written by Justin Shukuru Mulindwa, cofounder of Bel Avenir who has himself experienced firsthand the effects of being displaced and vulnerable. 95% of funds made from this print and poem go towards Bel Avenir. You can purchase the print and poem together or separately.
