Sunscreen choice matters most for children — here's why:

Children’s skin and bodies are uniquely vulnerable when it comes to sun protection.

👶 Kids' skin is up to 30% thinner, with a less developed barrier function. That means ingredients can pe*****te more easily.

🫀 And their detox systems — the liver and kidneys — are still developing.

➡️The liver matures around age 2–3.
➡️ Kidneys reach full function closer to age 5–7.

So when certain ingredients — like chemical UV filters — are absorbed through the skin, children’s bodies are less able to process or eliminate them.

💛 Zinc oxide, on the other hand, stays on the skin’s surface — protecting without entering the bloodstream.

That’s why we created our new SPF 50 mineral sunscreen, made just for NZ kids — safe, gentle, and effective.

Let's talk toxicity! Because it's true, the research sounds scary...

Most commonly-used chemical filters like Oxybenzone, Octinoxate, Octocrylene, Octisalate, Avobenzone and Homosalate have been shown to have endocrine effects. 4-Methyl-Benzylidene can cause thyroid toxicity, and Oxybenzone has been linked to endometriosis (in humans, noting this doesn't prove causality) and altered birth weights (in male rats...). Yikes!

BUT these effects were shown in animal or cellular studies, using concentrations WAAAAYY higher than we would ever be exposed to in real life. That's partly because sunscreen is highly regulated. And, well, you don't usually eat your sunscreen or take long, luxurious baths in it... do you? Didn't think so.

So for most people over the age of 2 or 3, chemical UV filters are, actually, safe.

☀️ Think SPF tells the whole story? Not quite.

SPF only measures protection against UVB rays – the ones that cause sunburn.

But UVA rays sink deep into your skin, causing DNA damage, pre-mature skin aging and skin cancer. Yep, it's not just those sunburn-causing UVB rays that can seriously harm us. UVA rays can too.

That’s why you need broad-spectrum sunscreen: it protects against both UVA and UVB.

Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide (mineral UV filters) are naturally broad-spectrum. Chemical sunscreens require a mix of UV filters to provide the same protection.

Quick tip for parents:
• SPF → UVB protection
• PA rating → UVA protection
• PA++++ = the strongest UVA protection available
