SAKURA x J’AKE STUDIOS
Jacob Coutie’s clothing production is a testament to his commitment to sustainable environmental practice. The textiles used to make his pieces are sourced from found and recycled materials, giving new life to discarded garments. This sustainable practice is not only about reducing waste, which the textiles industry produces at record levels, but also about infusing each piece with a unique history and character.
Drawing on traditional shapes and tailoring, J’AKE Studios shares our adoration for craftsmanship. These classically modern silhouettes felt like the perfect dress to usher in our new Sakura bottles.

This complementary pairing, between our new Sakura bottles and Coutie’s garments, reflects a shared design ethos. Like Curionoir, Coutie blends the traditional values of te ao Māori with contemporary design aesthetics, a design practice that stresses sustainability and is sensitive to whakapapa. Each of Coutie’s pieces is made with care, respect, and manākitanga, to encourage their use for years on end.

Our new Sakura Bottles have arrived in voluptuous, bulbous shapes. Inspired by the blossoms of the Sakura tree, these new white porcelain heirloom bottles have taken exaggerated forms, some resembling buds on the verge of flowering.
Over the week, we invite you to view the bottles, photographed here by Apela Bell, with twin models Han Hoheisel and Jin Hoheisel. Han and Jin, from 62 Models, are dressed by the local brand J’AKE Studios, founded by Māori fashion designer Jacob Coutie, from Kirikiriroa (Hamilton).

TE POU O NGĀ AO E RUA
“Te Pou O Ngā Ao E Rua is an ode to the great strides our people have achieved and continue to achieve. Carved on one side and left unmarked on the other, this pou represents the two worlds that many Māori navigate in Aotearoa. It is a symbol of support, a reminder of our tūpuna (ancestors) and their determination to hold onto te reo Māori, our native language and tikanga (customs) - Tiffany Witehira
