Dr. Eric Simpson of the Department of Dermatology, Oregon Health & Science University, Washington State, USA and a group of scientists and doctors from UK have published their research in Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology recently. Their research shows that emollient enhancement of the skin barrier from birth offers effective eczema prevention.

Skin epidermal defects might be the initiator of eczema and further allergic sensitization at early age. This may led to other allergic disorders, like food allergy, asthma and rhinitis. Thus, enhancement of the skin barrier for baby might prevent the onset of skin allergy and probably the later allergic sensitization.

The researchers found a significant protective effect with the use of daily emollient, like using body lotion, the incidence of eczema has a risk reduction of 50%. This would be a simple and feasible intervention of the allergic diseases at early age.
