🧐 Chalk and cheese 🤩

I love my B&As because just like when I’m weeding the garden, it’s easy to get distracted by those last bits of pesky mess! It’s really easy to lose sight of how far you’ve come.

That’s why the side-by-side helps me so much. I can see the direct results of my mahi without the distortions of time and perfectionism ✨

It's always a pleasure having this young fella in, and I know as a mum how much pleasure it brings to his family when he's once again looking sharp. Dreads do require maintenance, but its a 3/6-monthly sit rather than the daily struggle. So they can be a great option for kids who want long hair but hate the hairbrush.

I'm currently taking bookings for June, please get in touch if you're looking for a fresh set, a tidy, or remediation of troublesome locs. I gotchu! 💚

Working through the maturation phase is so rewarding!

Many people don’t know about the maturation (or, “messy”!) phase of real dreadlocks. But, this bit is where true dreadies are made - inside and out!

For most people, this phase lasts about a year post-installation. But it does depend on your hair type and aftercare routine.

These beauties are settling in really nicely. 😍 They are beginning to form naturally at the bases, and while the loose hairs are still attempting to wriggle free they are also beginning to accept their new way of being.

It’s such a blessing to have wonderful, warm clients who get this! You simply can’t rush a good thing, and I wholeheartedly believe walking this path builds huge character.

It's been pretty quiet over here on the social media front - but rest assured, there's been a LOT happening behind the scenes! 🎥

To kick off a wee run of overdue B&A's, here's a kicker - a resection of one large, problematic dread into two much more comfortable, and much more manageable loc. Woohoo, bet that felt good! 😁

Resectioning is far from ideal, but, it is possible. Our technique is tried and tested, and designed to have you leaving the studio looking (and feeling!) a million bucks better than when you came in. ✨

Resectioning isn't too tricky, but it is best done when there is lots of regrowth to work with already.

If your dreads have become unruly and difficult, flick us a message and let's make a plan to refresh your vibe 😎

"Can you save my son's hair?"

A few months back I got a text message from an unknown number. 📞

They'd been having trouble keeping their son's mullet in check and it had become very matted. They were hoping someone could save it from needing to be cut and they were keen for it to become properly dreaded. 🫤✅

This was therefore a combination of taming the freeform and creating a sweet new drullet set. The wee man sat like a boss and the first time he was able to run his fingers through his hair again.. bliss! He and his family were satisfied with the result and so am I. 😍 This will be miles easier to wash and keep tamed.

Key Takeaways:
✅ Dreads are a great option for kids who don't like brushing their hair
✅ Ditto for parents who are over fighting the hairbrush!
✅ Our method is comfortable and pain-free
✅ Surprise bonus: Nits don't like knotted hair so dreads are preventative (this is not a guarantee - we still recommend not sharing hats and using an essential oil spray to keep those nasties away)

I love to see all my dreads grow and mature and especially when they start with a great story like this one ☺️ Long may your dread journey continue and look forward to having you back! 🙏

So wonderful to see this client and these baby dreads back again - three months in! 😍

These are settling in sooo nicely, though it's easy to see why the first year is also known as the 'messy phase'. ☺️ IYKYK, right? .

We focused on root maintenance to ensure the best long-term outcome - less grow-together, gradual settling and organic maturation.

This client is a roller-derby QUEEN 👑 and wanted dreads since she was 15. She's LOVING her new hair, and her hair is loving being dreads! One thing she's finding tricky though is finding a helmet that fits her new hairstyle! Any roller-derby dreadheads out there got some advice for this lovely, funny, and very down-to-earth wahine?

Another day, another legend! 🙌

This client always keeps me entertained with his comedic nature. He's got some great insight and a cool outlook, so it makes time fly! 🚀

Always super rewarding to see a before-and-after like this. Helping someone look AND feel heaps better is the number one reason I do what I do!

Hoping we both win lotto, looking forward to soaking up some podcast recommendations, and all the best for a stellar Christmas get-together my friend! 🎄

Even though getting dreads takes time, sometimes there's that deep confidence of knowing you've saved someone literally WEEKS of their life of brushing or combing their troublesome natural hair.

This client reached out to us after dreaming of dreads since she was 15! It felt like dreads were exactly what her hair dreamed of too because once sectioned her hair started doing these happy little twirls of joy. Her hair locked up super tight and it felt like we were winning, somehow the clock thought somewhat differently...! She took the long sit like an absolute boss, even taking some time in the middle of the install to zoom up a workplace presentation. It's so nice when clients feel they can make this space their own - if that means turning us into your remote workplace for the day, we're all for it!

One thing I could not get OVER was the beautiful tones in her very unaltered hair colour. The pictures look a lot more like silver/grey however speckled through this were hints of roany gold which literally shimmered under the lights. I got to admire this for the whole duration of the install, which we did in one very long sitting (with some great entertainment along the way).

The desired end result here is a medium thickness. As new dreads mature, felt, rub together, and relax into place they will visually shrink. Trusting the process means knowing that great dreads are a combination of inspiration, genetic factors (hair type, volume, texture etc) and healthy maturation (aftercare, everyone!). We can't wait to see what how these shimmering locs grow and develop over time and we are super excited to spend (a lot less!) time with this client again. She's stoked and so are we!

When this client first got in touch, she told us straight up that her hair was pretty long, and indeed she totally tops the list of the longest hair we've worked with.

It was an honour to work with such a commitment. Let loose, her flowing hair almost touched the ground from the chair. The goal was a peekaboo partial, and she had grown her hair entirely for this. The remainder is now scheduled for a matching trim.

We had talked about shrinkage/loss of length and this is always most apparent where hair is finer, such as the very base of the scalp and the frame around the face. This can be seen in the difference between the two images at the bottom. On the left, we see the first two rows (brickwork, these sections incorporate variation in her nape hairline), and on the right we see the third row overlaid (triangle sections). I was really happy with the result of this combination, she has some really happy, manageable dreads and the finished look is super tidy.

Was wonderful to meet and spend time with you and your lovely whānau.. an absolute legend and another homeschooling dread mama, we love your vibe! You're also so far the only client to have glimpsed the elusive Oscar.. snuggles may have been a bit ambitious eh. Keep up the epic aftercare and we look forward to seeing you back when the time is right for maintenance.

Another case of the "just a few more"s...

This rad human came in a few weeks back wanting some of her old extension tips installed on a few dreads she still had remaining, plus... maybe just one more row fresh with the tips...?

After a few weeks she was back in touch, hoping to complete her fully dreaded head before she headed for a visit back to her birthplace in South Africa. Along with her supplied tips she loved the idea of expressing herself a little more with a few pinks I had in stock. This colour blend perfectly complements her warm yet fiery character.

We were able to switch a few things around for her to get her in the chair, but it did mean we were a little rushed towards the end and honestly I'm not as happy with some of the blends on these as I could be. When the colours are so different from the natural hair shade it is difficult to achieve a natural looking fade and (depending on what the client's goal is) this is something I work to improve all of the time. As a perfectionist I'm looking forward to elevating these with some delicate blending finishing touches once she's back in Aotearoa.

One thing I was really happy with on this install was the way her crown really lent itself to the most random yet almost impeccably even, sections. I like to follow the flow of growth and sometimes the hair just already knows where it wants to go. This results in a super natural finish with great coverage and assures that they will stay super comfortable as they mature and grow.

Another happy client and new friend, we look forward to hearing all about your trip when you return!

For those of you who have asked - how do I do my own dreads? Well, it looks a lot like this… ☺️😈
