Saturday 6th of December saw 20 of the club’s keenest young anglers descend on the Sandspit Marina wharf to fight it out in the annual kid’s fishing day.
As the sun lifted over the grounds, the anticipation was palpable. Everyone quickly relaxed into their work though, and the fishing was hot! A great mix of snapper, jack macs, mullet, kahawai and wrasse were plucked from the water. Most fish were quickly liberated, although 5 or 6 legal snapper (up to 36cm!) were taken home to feed the young anglers’ families. Great to see these fish in so close.
Some memorable moments were watching two spools running red hot, only to be dusted off in the poles. A young man also managed to catch and land a rock covered in oysters.
So good to see young kids and their families and friends working together and having so much fun in such a simple format. A real highlight of the Club’s calendar.
An informal prize giving was held with everyone’s catches acknowledged, stories retold and plenty of prizes to go around. Hunting and Fishing Warkworth helped to make this possible so a huge thanks to them for their support. A big spread from the Sandspit Yacht Club Kitchen and Bar refuelled and hydrated the crews.
Big thanks to the Sandspit Marina for opening up the fishing grounds for us (usually closed to fishing), and to SYC for all their help - not to mention the ice-creams they supplied!
Huge thanks to Eddie for being a legend and organising the prizes and running the comp on the day.
Hope to see the same faces and more again next year.
