Unity in Our Streets: A Call for Inclusion

Mark the date. Stand for our community.

We are calling on all people—from every background, faith, and identity—to join us in a peaceful stand for the values that truly define us.

For too long, messages of division, racism, and exclusion have sought to pull us apart.

Enough is enough.

We are coming together not to mirror the hostility we oppose, but to drown it out with a powerful, quiet dignity.

This is a call to:

Protect our Whānau:

Stand with our Māori, Takatāpui, and Rainbow communities.

Choose Peace:

Our strength lies in our calm and our solidarity.
Show Up for Each Other:

Whether you are an ally, an advocate, or a concerned neighbor, your presence matters.
This is a peaceful kaupapa.

We welcome all who believe that diversity is our strength and that hate has no place in our home.

Watch this space for location details.

Bring your heart, bring your hope, and bring your peace.

‼️Submission time!!‼️you have until tomorrow 6 October!!!

This government wants to ignore your protests and ignore you.

There’s a bill open for submissions at the moment that amends the Summary Offences Act 1981 - it makes it an offence to protest in residential areas.

If it goes through, it will make some protests illegal.

This is a government wanting to shut down dissent and hide the fact that the public has demands that they are ignoring.

WE DON’T SERVE THE GOVERNMENT THE GOVERNMENT SERVES US!

This is real slippery slope s**t. If you claim to care about free speech you should be against this bill. If you have ever protested anything or ever been angry at any government for what they’re going - you should be against this bill.

You can make a submission here on the Summary Offences (Demonstrations Near Residential Premises) Amendment Bill: https://www3.parliament.nz/en/pb/sc/make-a-submission/document/54SCJUST_SCF_B49E7971-0040-4D7E-2B43-08DDDDD857FA/summary-offences-demonstrations-near-residential-premises

Points to get across -

This proposed law is a dangerous overstep by the government aimed at outlawing protest.

It undermines our rights to freedom of speech and protest.

There are three major problems with this law:
The definition of ‘residential premise’ is so broad that it would include the embassies of foreign governments (that are usually considered to the be the “official residence” of the Ambassador and staff), other high profile political residences such as the Governor-General, AND it could also include large swathes of buildings where both commercial and residential premises are found, as well as residential premises where commercial operations take place. Here are a few scenarios that law professor Kris Gledhill has outlined:

Say someone is concerned about alcohol sales in an area. Would a protest outside shops where the manager lives upstairs now be criminal, because the address is mainly used as a residence?

Or suppose someone was making military drones in a large commercial barn on a rural estate where they lived. Would a protest at the entrance to the estate be criminal because the barn is an improvement to the land belonging to the dwelling?

How about a protest against a corporate farm allowing its dairy herd to make a local river unswimmable? Would that be illegal if the protest was at the river whose banks border the farm where workers live, and so is near a residence?

No warnings: The police can simply start arresting people with no warning that their protest may be illegal. The Amendment provides no mechanism for the police to issue any kind of warning (as is the case with the Trespass Act and some Crimes Act offences) despite the specific advice that it include this (see page 3 of the Regulatory Impact Statement). Instead, the police will simply decide what is an ‘unreasonable disruption’ and start arresting people. This is a totally unacceptable expansion of powers without any proper oversight or safeguards.

There is already sufficient existing criminal law.

We already have a huge number of offences including breach of the peace, disorderly behaviour, disorderly assembly, trespass as well as Council bylaws for noise and other disruptions that apply to protests.

Solidarity for Gaza!

If you are going to read something today, make this it!

We stand on a precipice between democracy and barbarism we must vigorously resist the dark tendrils that we also are witnessing here.

We urge our people to look sharp and gather like minds to locally resist and nationally rise against all who seek to herd our nation towards authoritarianism.

The darkness of the right is weakest in the early stages and finds our diversity, unity, culture an absolute sanitizing and undefeatable formidable foe.

If we wish to win, we show up and crush their lies as soon as they metastasise on the streets.

The time is now!

The decline of US democracy is the most consequential event for the free world since the end of the Cold War.

Every democratic society in the world has all but lost their most powerful strategic ally. For the first time since World War II, the collective of liberal democracies that became known as "the West" is without a military superpower as their security guarantee.

Having withstood decades of intense information warfare from Russia and China intent on eroding public trust in our democratic institutions, the unparalleled power of the American media ecosystem will now be harnessed and directed towards the same sinister goal.

Across Europe, east Asia, Oceania, and the Americas, islands of liberal democracy prevail, aware that the fall of Washington now brings the front lines directly to their electorate. We must turn our minds to the battles we are about to face.

For generations, we embraced US culture as a positive by-product of its soft-power. Those within the anglosphere, in particular, found themselves voluntarily engulfed by shared thought leaders, conversations, and narratives. The disagreements that began on US cable news shows would invariably find themselves deliberated across dinner tables in Australia. Our societies, we thought, were almost inseparable, guided by our common sacred devotion to the inalienable tenets of democracy.

While tens of millions of Americans undoubtedly stoically fight to preserve these values, the inability, or unwillingness, of the larger populace to restrain the irrefutably authoritarian inclinations of this administration reveals a cancerous aspect of a culture we have naively consumed since childhood without consideration for our own health.

We have already witnessed unprecedented attempts by Trump and Vance to directly interfere in the political machinations of its previous allies in order to elevate illiberal right-wing parties that reject the rules based order and embrace the Kremlin's brand of malignant authoritarianism.

In Brazil and Israel, Trump has unapologetically exerted the power of the US state in an effort to compromise the rule of law there as a favour to his friends, and to advance political movements he believes better aligns with his.

His oligarch patron, Elon Musk, has utilised the power of his money and his media platform to propagate destructive themes of race wars and Christian nationalism throughout the world. Meanwhile, the inescapable influence of unrestrained podcasters secreting anachronistic notions of masculinity and anti-feminism into the minds of our young men presents a threat to years of painstaking work to deconstruct oppressive remnants of our patriarchal past.

Simultaneously, the beacons of freedom that once broadcasted to the defiant minds fighting against tyrants and despots abroad have fallen silent, defunded, no longer interested in advancing values its benefactor has abandoned.

But of all the toxic overflow threatening to contaminate our own political systems, we must not surrender our strict adherence to the norms which underwrite our democracy. The abuses of power and political interferences that are uncontained by legal restraints, but are the essential keystones upon which all other pillars of democracy rest.

Trump's near daily assaults on these principles has exhausted the already fatigued sensibilities of a disengaged American public. This is a condition we must inoculate populations against at all costs. The preservation of civility, mutual respect and dignity, and the understanding of civic responsibility; this is where the home front battles will be won or lost. Corruption, of any kind or of any magnitude, must never be tolerated, lest its insidious roots take hold like a noxious w**d suffocating the spirit of life.

Scrutinising every faultline that has induced America's free fall into fascism is not an endeavour in morbid fascination, it's a necessary act of self-preservation. If the once immutable US Republic can crumble from the corrosive infection of political populism, we must study every symptom, every warning sign, and every sickness it imposes on its host.

The age of liberal democratic expansion is over. Until the battle for the soul of America is complete, we must retreat to our fortifications and prepare our fight for survival. The freedom of our children will depend on our response to these events.
