Your skin barrier runs the show.
When clients tell us their skin suddenly feels dry, reactive, breaking out or just “not behaving”, we almost always start by looking at one thing first… the skin barrier.
Your barrier is the outermost layer of the skin. Its job is to keep the good things in (hydration) and the irritating things out (bacteria, pollutants, allergens).
When it’s functioning well, skin tends to feel calm, balanced and hydrated.
When it’s disrupted, you might notice:
• dehydration
• sensitivity
• breakouts
• redness
• products suddenly stinging
• skin that feels tight but still oily
A lot of the time this isn’t about needing more intensive products. It’s about restoring balance.
In clinic we usually focus on three things first:
• Water hydration (not drinking more water) to bring moisture back into the skin
• Lipid support to strengthen the barrier and stop water loss
• Targeted treatments that work with the skin rather than overwhelming it
Healthy skin always starts with a healthy barrier. Once that’s functioning properly, everything else we do works better.
