We have recently been contacted by OneMusic NZ regarding changes and enforcement under the Copyright Act (1994). Under this law, once music is played outside of a domestic setting — including within a business — it is considered a “public performance” and requires a paid music licence.

Unfortunately, the cost of obtaining the required music licence, alongside our existing Spotify subscriptions, could total up to $1000 per year. As a small business, this is simply not a cost that Le Plaisir can reasonably afford at this time.

As the director of Le Plaisir I am not choosing not to put this additional cost onto our clients, I have made the decision to no longer play music within the salon moving forward.

I also personally find it difficult to understand how artists are accurately compensated under this system, as businesses are not required to submit records of exactly what music is being played each day to ensure the correct artists are being paid.

Clients are still more than welcome to connect their own personal Spotify accounts to our Bluetooth speaker during their appointments if they wish to listen to music.
