Matariki is a treasured occasion in Aotearoa. The reappearance of the Matariki star cluster in the sky marks the beginning of a new year on the Māori lunar calendar. ⁠

Mātauranga Māori (ancestral knowledge and wisdom) are at the heart of Matariki. It’s a time to spend with whānau (family) and friends, to take time to remember loved ones who are no longer with us, enjoy some kai (food), share stories, and reflect on the year gone by. It is also a time to plan towards the future - taking a moment to think about not only your own dreams & goals, but also of your whānau (family), hapori (community) and our taiao (environment). ⁠

You might be familiar with the Matariki constellation by another name! One of the brightest star clusters visible from any part of the world, their many names include the Pleiades, the Seven Sisters, Makali’i and Subaru. They have an incredibly rich lore in many cultures.
