The muscles at the back of the thigh are made up of three muscles called the hamstrings: the semitendinosus, semimembranosus, and biceps femoris. These muscles lie between the hip and knee joints. The origin of the muscle is the ischial tuberosity. The hamstrings are responsible for stretching the thigh and flexing the knee, especially when walking.
