A bit of maintenance on some awesome mature dreads

Matted hair is what happens when the normal knots that occur in hair are not combed out or separated into dreadlocks. I have been given permission from the family to share this story.

A 12 year old girl came to see be this week with a widespread hair matt, covering 80% of her scalp, let's call her Cathy. Cathy was savagely bullied, which resulted in a brain injury, severe social anxiety, and a wide range of struggles with her mental health. This combined with sensory issues led her down a path of neglecting herself, which caused a hair matt. This was difficult to live with, and was painful.

Removal took 10 hours. It was a long day, but she left here with loose hair and a smile on her face.

Matted hair often form after an extended period of inability to perform self care tasks, such as washing and brushing hair. I most often see them on people who have been struggling with physical or mental health. The longer the matts are left, the more complex the the removal process is. Taking the time to remove the matts rather than cutting them out can be an important part of a healing journey.

If you see someone with hair like this, withhold judgement. You never know another person's lived experience and a little bit of compassion goes a long way. I would like to thank Cathy and her family for coming to see me. It was an honour to be trusted with such an important job.
