Who are you and where are you from?
My name is Jacob Crooks – born and raised in Greymouth. I grew up playing league for Cobden-Kohinoor and now play rugby for Marist.

How would you describe your sound or style?
I mainly play Neuro and Jump Up Drum and Bass – high energy, gritty, and full of movement.

What inspired you to start DJing?
I got into DJing after going to my first raves and festivals. Watching the way a DJ can control a crowd with the right tracks at the right time had me thinking – why can’t I do that too?

Any musical influences or artists you look up to?
Early on, there wasn’t anyone specific. But as I got deeper into DnB, I really started looking up to guys like A.M.C and Crossy – both for different reasons, but equally inspiring.

What can people expect from your set at the barbershop?
Expect high-energy Drum and Bass that’ll get your body moving – and probably twist a few rubber arms into grabbing a fizzy or two as things kick off.

What’s your go-to track to get the crowd moving?
Something everyone can sing along to, or a certified banger like the intro to “Dead Limit” by The Upbeats & Noisia – that always hits.

What’s your setup – what gear do you use?
My setup is pretty simple – I use Pioneer DDJ-1000s and Marley headphones, which were a gift. I usually play at home or at parties, but they get the job done!

Any recent projects or events?
At the end of last year, I dropped my first mix on SoundCloud called Pilot, and it surprised me by hitting over 4k streams! I’ve got more polished mixes on the way, so keep an ear out.

What do you think about performing in a barbershop setting?
Performing in a barbershop and live-streaming it is definitely a first for me, but I’m hyped to give it a crack. Niko’s Barbershop has the perfect setup for the kind of energy and community vibe he’s building – it’s exciting to be a part of it.
