My garden is at a little lull while waiting for the summer crops.
Looking forward to beans, zucchini, chilli, rampant, choko and tomatoes.

I love this time of year when you have a mix of cover crops and plants that you are saving for seed. It all looks so lush its hard to create space for all the summer crops

My favourite soap is this pure simple soap. Made with coconut oil, lye and water. It is cleansing, with lovely creamy suds. It is versatile and because it keeps its shape can be used in the bathroom, laundry and even kept by the outside tap for dirty hands after gardening. This is an everyday soap and does not contain essential oils which are very resource hungry and in reality the perfume is just washed down the drain.

Every year I enjoy the winter miracle of Miner's Lettuce. It is a great boost to winter salads adding a sweeter taste to the strong flavours that make up the cold weather greens. Once spring starts, the Miner's Lettuce flowers, seeds and dies down to faithfully return the following winter. Another vegetable with little effort! My type of
gardening!

Providing ground cover is essential to protect the soil. Violets are a vigorous green ground cover, that has a lovely flower in winter which are edible. I like them in salads. The leaves are also edible but I found them rather fibrous.

They may not look perfect but they are tasty and self sown. Food without effort-can't complain!

I grow nettle for the admiral butterfly and as a compost activator. How do you like to use nettle?
I enjoy a relaxed approach with the garden allowing some plants to go to seed and others to flower. It creates food and spaces for the birds and invertebrates. At this time of the year the birds are hungry so I have to cover some of my tender greens and lettuces. I won't cover all my crop because we all need each other even if I don't understand the complexity of the relationship.
