Collagen is a protein, and your digestive system breaks proteins down during digestion.
Through processes including hydrolysis, collagen is broken down into smaller peptides and amino acids. These smaller components can then be absorbed through the small intestine and enter the bloodstream.
That’s also why you’ll see “hydrolyzed collagen” or “collagen peptides” on many collagen supplements. The collagen has already been broken down into smaller peptide chains.
