Whanau hauora is about supporting tangata to live well, not just treating illness. Prevention is one of the greatest gifts we can offer our whanau. Every contact with whanau is an opportunity to have a positive conversation about their health and wellbeing.
Why it matters?
Maori and Pacifica people continue to experience lower participation in immunisations and national screening programmes
Lower participation often leads to later diagnosis, more complex treatment and poorer health outcomes
Early detection through screening and protection through immunisation saves lives and helps keep whanau together and well.
Key messages:
· Immunisations protect tamariki, pakeke, kaumātua, and vulnerable whānau from preventable illnesses.
· Flu vaccination helps reduce serious illness and can also lower the risk of complications such as heart attacks and strokes, particularly for those with long-term health conditions.
· Breast, bowel, and cervical screening can detect changes early, often before symptoms appear, leading to better outcomes.
· Screening is about finding disease early—or preventing it altogether—not waiting until someone becomes unwell.
How can we increase engagement
· Build trusted relationships through whakawhanaungatanga.
· Make every appointment count—ask, "Are you up to date with your immunisations and screening?"
· Offer warm, culturally safe conversations that acknowledge whānau circumstances.
· Use simple, easy-to-understand information and avoid medical jargon.
· Work alongside whānau, rather than expecting whānau to navigate the system alone.
· Provide flexible options such as community clinics, marae-based services, outreach, and after-hours appointments where possible.
· Follow up with kindness and persistence—sometimes people need several invitations before they engage.
· Celebrate positive stories and local champions to encourage others.
Working together
No one service can do this alone.
By collaborating across primary care, iwi providers, Pacific providers, community organisations, and social services, we can reduce barriers and improve access.
Sharing resources, referrals, and consistent health messages strengthens our collective impact.

Recent changes to the bowel screening programme include the extension of eligibility in Aotearoa, now inviting people aged 58 and 59 as well as those up to 74.
She talked about bowel cancer being one of the most common and serious cancers in the country, and that it also sits high in terms of deaths. The key point was that NZ unfortunately has some of the highest rates in the world.
The focus of screening, as explained, is catching it early, because the earlier it’s found, the easier it is to treat and the better the outcomes tend to be.
Overall, it was really about getting more people into the programme and encouraging those eligible to actually take up the test when it comes their way.

When Sally Maoate sits down to talk with someone about bowel screening she knows the conversation could very well save that person’s life.
It's her job to educate and encourage people to participate in the national bowel screening programme.
The Bowel Screening Programme Outreach team at Te Whatu Ora Te Matau a Māui Hawke’s Bay are celebrating four years since the national programme was rolled out.
Since its launch in Hawke’s Bay, a total of 57,737 kits have been posted out to eligible residents aged between 60 and 74, with 33,503 kits returned.
Of those, 1,520 people returned positive results requiring more investigation and 83 cancers were detected.
Mrs Maoate wants people to understand that not everyone experiences symptoms, but screening could detect cancers earlier and allows for precancerous polyps to be removed, which in the medium to long term reduces the incidence of bowel cancer.
“Do it for your whānau – and your mokopuna.”
