Who would have thought 10 days ago that we were facing such devastation and heartbreak?

There are no words to adequately convey the sympathy and sadness we feel for those who have lost loved ones or been through absolute trauma to survive. It's so hard to know what to write but our hearts go out to all who are hurting.

Like so many throughout NZ at Mangatahi we were cut off for several days with no means of communication with the outside world. It was stressful not knowing if family and loved ones were safe.

When the power was restored and we heard the news it was unbelievable. We knew it was bad but nobody imagined how bad … the beautiful Dartmoor and Esk Valley were obliterated and the damage sustained in Hawke's Bay, Gisborne, Coromandel and up north … absolutely awful.

I just want to extend our heartfelt sympathy to every hurting traumatised person – we share your sorrow and feel your pain. We salute all the brave rescue teams, police and volunteers who are working to exhaustion right now. You are our heroes.

We feel fortunate that our home and garden are untouched however out on the land where we farm livestock there is huge damage – the farm water system has been taken out, fences destroyed, track access damaged and the farm bridge damaged. The beautiful landscape is scarred by many slips and landslides. Our neighbours and neighbouring districts are the same. So much to come to terms with.

If you are wishing there was something you could do, there is. Please donate to the Flood Relief Fund and if you have a planned visit to Hawke's Bay in the future, don’t cancel, our hospitality people are desperate for business and the accommodation sector is ready to ensure your stay is memorable for the right reasons. Never before has New Zealand needed you to buy locally.

Are you feeling overwhelmed, burnt out or not sleeping properly? At this time of year there is a lot going on and we could all do with a little time out.

Here are a few tips to get you relaxing...
💜 Run a deep bath, add a few drops of lavender oil. Remember to breathe deeply too.
