I came into this with zero client base, so every appointment, review, recommendation, double-tapped post, story share, reshare and even the occasional “you should go see AJ” has helped me build this little business into what it’s slowly becoming.

I took “Safari” and ran with it. 🐆

I spent this morning working on my own hand for the NZ Nail Tech Summit Side Quest. enjoy my slide of outdoor nails, driving the car nails, chicken foot nails, taking out the trash nails & more 😂

Sooooo we’ve got tortoiseshell, crocodile, giraffe, zebra, cheetah and an impala lily inspired by the flowers found across African safari landscapes.

I specifically chose cheetah print rather than the more common leopard print because, well… everyone does leopard print. I wanted to see if I could make the cheetah pattern work in a way that still felt obviously safari without taking the easy option.

And the lily? My first ever 3D flower.
Sheeeesh 😅 I definitely need to practice. But you’ve got to start somewhere.

Sometimes the best thing I can do during an appointment is know what to leave alone. 👀

My mum came in after eight weeks, and between working on her mini farm, looking after animals and spending hours in her garden, her hands had definitely been put through their paces.
She also has eczema, which contributes to the dryness and irritation around her nails. You can see the cuticle overgrowth, thickened skin and redness around her eponychium.

Normally, it might be tempting to tidy all of that up, but her eponychium was already inflamed and irritated. Her appointment was for an IBX treatment, so I wasn’t about to start clipping away at angry skin just to make the after photo look prettier. IBX is designed to support and reinforce the natural nail, which was the focus of this appointment.

So yes, you can still see the thickened skin and cuticle in the after photo. That was intentional. This is the difference after just her first IBX treatment, and I’m looking forward to seeing how her nails progress over the next few appointments.

Although knowing Mum, she’ll probably head straight back out into the garden afterwards. 😂

Are you a “same thing every time” nail person?

Because I feel like there are two types of people…

You either find your colour and stick with it forever, or you sit down and immediately start scrolling through the swatches looking for something completely different. 😂

I’m definitely more of a plain/natural nail gal myself. Anything colour growing out makes me want to pick! Give me a clear or tinted base, a clean glossy finish, or the occasional bit of negative space nail art and I’m happy.

But I do love seeing what everyone else chooses. Some of you are so much braver with colour than I am!

IT’S 2014 AND YOU GET ONE OF YOUR FIRST EVER CLIENT SELFIES. 🥹

This photo was sent to me by one of my clients after her very first appointment with me, with the simple message:

“I love my nails!”

And honestly, looking back at it now hits a little differently.

Back then, I hadn’t even wrapped my head around the fact that this little, newly developing dream of mine might actually become something real. I was learning, experimenting, figuring things out as I went and just hoping that people would actually like what I created enough to come back.

Let alone take photos of their nails and send them to me. Or tell their friends. Or become regular clients.

Fast forward through 12 years, so many ups and downs, career changes, life flips, new goals and plenty of moments where I wondered what the hell I was doing… and somehow, I’m still here.

My goals have changed a little since 2014. The way I work has changed. My skills have changed. And my version of what a “dream career” looks like has definitely changed.

But one thing hasn’t.

I’m still in the nail industry.

And I think 2014 me would be pretty bloody proud of that. 🤎

This week’s NZ Nail Tech Summit challenge was all about celebrating another local business, so I couldn’t go past one of my favourite cafés.
