π₯ Language mattersπ₯
Another great post by Ross Thornton - The Back Pain Coach
Back pain is a silent battle that many face on a daily basis!
It can hinder our performance, and it can make us feel isolated.
But did you know that the words we use to describe our pain can also have a powerful impact on how we experience it?
Studies have shown that the language we use to describe our pain can actually change the way our brains
perceive it.
For example, using words like
"throbbing" or "burning" can create a more intense and negative experience,
while using words like "aching" or "discomfort" can create a more manageable experience.
But it's not just the words we use to describe our pain that matters - the words we use to describe ourselves can also have a significant impact.
Negative self-talk, such as saying, "l can't handle this pain," or "l'll never be able to do that again," can worsen the
cycle of back pain and make it even harder to manage.
On the other hand, using empowering and positive language can help us to
reframe our pain and shift our focus from helplessness to hope.
Saying things like "I can manage this pain" or "l am strong and resilient" can
help us to feel more in control and capable of coping with our chronic back pain.
So next time you're struggling with back pain, take a moment to reflect on the words you're using to describe your pain and yourself.
By being mindful of the language we
use, we can harness the power of words to make back pain feel more manageable and less isolating.
