Join us and experience the real Middle-earth™ at the Hobbiton Movie Set, where, in the heart of the Waikato region, you can step into the lush pastures of the Shire™, as seen in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. Fall in love with the Alexander family sheep farm, just as acclaimed director Sir Peter Jackson did, as you journey through the unequivocal beauty of the land, with the mighty Kaimai Ranges towering in the distance. Your guide will then escort you around the set, showing the intricate detailing, pointing out the most famous locations and explaining how
the movie magic was made. You will be taken around the 12 acre set; past Hobbit Holes, the Mill and into the world-famous Green Dragon™ Inn, where you will be presented with a complimentary, exclusive beverage to conclude your own Middle-earth™ adventure.
We are thrilled to share that Hobbiton Movie Set has been voted as a location on the brand new MONOPOLY New Zealand Edition board! The new board takes players on a journey across New Zealand, celebrating the places and experiences that shape memories, inspire adventures and make New Zealand unique.
Gather your fellowship, and journey around some of New Zealand’s most iconic landmarks, including Bag End, home of two of Hobbiton’s most adventurous Hobbits!

We are thrilled to share that the three Stone Trolls, William, Bert and Tom have arrived and are now nestled in their new environment among the trees on the outskirts of the Movie Set! 🧌🧌🧌
The tallest of the Stone Trolls, William, stands at 5.7 meters with his friends not far below. They have been scenic-painted and aged by hand using film-industry techniques to recreate their weathered on-screen stone appearance that will last for generations, visually telling the story of trolls, as seen in the Hobbit Trilogy and the Lord of the Rings Trilogy (at which point they had been frozen in stone for 77 years). Construction of the Trolls has been undertaken by the Hobbiton Movie Set Art Department, including sculptors and painters who worked on the original Trilogies to ensure the design remains authentic to the film.
Director of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit Trilogies, Sir Peter Jackson has long aspired to share the experience of the Stone Trolls with visitors, saying "Hobbiton has always been a welcoming place, so naturally I thought it needed three enormous trolls. I’ve wanted visitors to encounter William, Bert and Tom here for years, and it’s wonderful to see them finally settled in. They’re considerably better behaved since turning to stone”.
All visitors to Hobbiton Movie Set can now step into this brand new fully immersive environment as part of all Hobbiton Movie Set Tour experiences from today, 10 September, 2026.

Eagle-eyed fans may have noticed that Hobbiton Movie Set was not open for visitors, well-wishers or distant relations last week… The rumours are true, we were catching up with very old friends and sharing our slice of The Shire with the production crew from The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.
Our team had the privilege of supporting the production, with some of us even donning hairy feet as extras for some scenes!
It’s wonderful to see New Zealand return to the screen as Middle-earth and for Hobbiton Movie Set to be a filming location again, especially as we prepare to mark the 25th anniversary of the release of first instalment of the original film trilogy.
We’re excited to announce that we will be hosting a special celebration here in The Shire with food, cheer, entertainment, and some special surprises on Friday 4 December, 2026.
