A follow-up to my last reel...

First, a clarification. When I said beauty therapist, I meant skin therapist. And when I said doctor, I was talking about aesthetic doctors in the context of those who do injectables and devices and provide skin care/products, not general medical care. I’m sorry if that wasn’t clear!

Second, to everyone who said it works best as a team, you’re absolutely right. That’s the way it should be!

And third, I was saddened by how many people felt the need to defend themselves or their profession, and I noted it was overwhelmingly therapists, not aesthetic doctors, doing this, and that’s exactly why I wanted to start this conversation. That in many ways says much of what’s wrong.

No one should feel this way! If that is an industry or colleague bias, then it’s time it changed. I’ve never been so impressed with skincare results as when I sit in rooms of therapists. That’s skill and art, experience, knowledge and science combined. That’s shout-from-the-rooftops territory, not something to feel inferior about. Skin therapists lead doctors follow when it comes to looking after skin everyday.

I’ve heard many people say ‘doctors spend less time on the skin than therapists in their training’ - that’s not true, and I speak as someone who has done both a medical degree and L4 beauty including A&P. But the focus of that study is different. Aesthetic medicine is a number of mini specialities and the current model is that we are generalists in it all. Skin care, like all of it, deserves specialist knowledge and focus. Some of us medics take the time to really really drill down into that, but not many. Therapists live it day in day out.

Thank you for every comment.

You are all brilliant at what you do. But for my own everyday skin health? If I’m going anywhere I’m going to a skin therapist, and I stand by that completely. You are amazing.
