Iris Store + Studio
Wellington's independent beauty store.
Sorry, not sorry to the customer who recently asked if one of our products was "low-tox". While I genuinely welcome all chat in store, questions like this do make me want to set the record straight - they're the direct result of fear-based marketing that it’s well and truly time the beauty industry stopped feeding you.
Every cosmetic product sold in New Zealand (and Australia, and the EU, and the USA…) is governed by regulations with one overarching requirement: it must not cause harm*. Full stop. The end.
No cosmetic brand, whether marketed as "clean," "natural," or otherwise, can legally sell you something "toxic". The regulations don't allow it.
What you've been sold with the idea of "low-tox" beauty is fear. Fear that the other products on the shelf are somehow dangerous. They're not.
Twenty+ years in this industry, and misinformation is my biggest pet peeve.
Highly recommend following the science communicators working their butts off to counter all the beauty marketing bull we’re subjected to. A great start is who has a fantastic podcast where she talks with experts in fields like microplastics, talc, animal testing, sunscreen and more.

Have you met us?
Let's start with Hannah.
Laughs at her own jokes. Loves a red lip.
Did your brows come out of the 90's/00's very much scathed and thin?
Our tips and recommendations will alwasy be dependant on how much the 'thing' bothers you, and how much time and cost you're willing to spend to mitigate it.
1. Brow serum - a booster for hair growth. We stock Revitabrow at Iris, which is Opthamologist created and does the thing (grows the brows).
2. Brow Pencil or Gel - Use pencil if you have gaps or uneveness in your brows. Use gel if your shape is good but you want to define the hairs.
3. Brow Tint - come and see us for a custom coloured tint. We can balance uneven/ overplucked brows, lift arches and play with your brow shape a little more (if you have sufficient hair or vellus hairs which will take tint).
If in doubt, pop in and have a chat about how we can help you with your brows 🧡
Come on in, the water is fine. In fact, we're often told our sparkling water is the BEST 🧡
I remember joking when we first opened “just you wait for my GRWM vids”. Well here we go. Be gentle with me 🧡
The takeaways from this one:
- If you’re trying out a brighter, deeper, or red-er lip colour than you’re used to seeing yourself in, apply it at the very beginning of your makeup application.
You’ll get more used to seeing yourself wearing the new shade over the time you’re doing your makeup. And you’ll be able to balance the rest of the look to the lipstick and your comfort level.
- Don't do your very first GRWM filming the day before you have a haircut booked, when your fringe is at its longest and most annoying.
The Iris origin story 🧡
A tale as old as time. The biggest of passions and a desire to do better for the 'invisible woman'.
But with actual industry experience and knowledge to back it up.
Many starting before I was ready-s.
Much holding on for the ride (with the very best of hands holding mine).
Coming soon (next week!) to Iris. We're super excited to be adding the delicious to our skincare line up 🧡 It's one of those brands which got me ALL of the "you're looking extra-glowy" compliments while I was trying it out. Stay tuned!
