OK, we don't like putting other people down and that includes other soap makers BUT do us a favour and make sure whatever soap you're using doesn't include "Triclosan"as an ingredient... lots do.

It does have antibacterial properties... because its a pesticide... and rubbing that into your skin every day isn't a flash idea.

You can always of course go fully chemical free and use Aleppo Soap www.soapofaleppo.com but not using Triclosan is a good start.

So, if you're dreadfully bored while scrolling through Facebook, why not brush up on your history... Like the history of our Soap!

Aleppo Soap, a true relic of an ancient time that bridged millennia’s, traditions, and provided a solid foundation for creation of all modern soaps across the world.

Aleppo Soap originated from the Syrian city of Aleppo, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. This ancient city thrived on trade for thousands of years, and was famous for being the endpoint of the famous Silk Road that bridged East and the West.

One of the most important trade items of the city of Aleppo is without a doubt their unique soap that was made by the generations of merchant families and manufacturers for thousands of years.

The formula and manufacturing process for this highly prized soap did not change over time and is still today preformed in its original form...

Olive oil, sweet bay oil and water are mixed, heated and then left to cool. Soap is cut from the form, and then left to age in the shade for minimum of seven months, during which time soaps outside will change from the deep green to a light brown.

People from all around the world who visited Aleppo quickly realised that the claims of the soap salesman are true. Natural and biodegradable Aleppo soap is one of the most famous beauty products of the old age, natural moisturizer and humectant, so pure in its form (it has no preservatives, chemical additives or fragrances) that it is used by many for washing babies.

The exact origin of the Aleppo soap is lost in time, and even though there is hundreds of tales and legends about its creation, modern historians cannot confirm any one. The earliest written mentions of this soap come from the 8th century AD, and by the time of the crusades it became one of the most hotly traded commodities of the Syrian territories.

So we've had a couple of questions recently about how our soap is made... If you fancy some weekend reading here it is....

First, the olive oil is brought into a large, in-ground vat along with water. There's an underground fire which heats the contents to a boil. Boiling lasts three days while the oil reacts to become a thick liquid soap.

The laurel oil is added at the end of the process, and after it is mixed in, the liquid soap is poured over a large sheet of waxed paper on the floor.

From here it's left to cool down and harden for about a day. While cooling, soap makers with planks of wood strapped to their feet walk over the soap to make it an even thickness.

The soap is then cut by dragging a rake-like cutting device through the soap to cut it one way, then again the other way until it's cut into individual blocks. Each is stamped with our soap artisan's name.

The blocks are then stacked in staggered cylinders to allow maximum air exposure. Once they have dried sufficiently, they are put into a subterranean chamber to be aged for six months to a year.

While it is aging, the soap goes through several chemical changes. First, and most importantly, the free alkaline content of the soap (the alkaline which did not react with the oil during saponification) breaks down upon slow reaction with air. The moisture content of the soap is also reduced, making the soap hard and long lasting. And lastly, the colour of the outside of the soap turns a pale gold, while the inside remains green.

If you've read this far congrats, you're an Aleppo Soap expert! x
