INTERNATIONAL DAY OF SIGN LANGUAGES: COMMUNICATION IS FOR EVERYONE
23 September is the International Day of Sign Languages, a day that recognises the importance of sign languages and the rights of Deaf people to access communication, education, information and participation in society.
Sign languages are real, complete languages with their own grammar, structure, vocabulary and cultural significance. They are not simply a collection of gestures or a visual version of spoken language.
There are also many different sign languages around the world. In Aotearoa New Zealand, New Zealand Sign Language, or NZSL, is an important part of our Deaf community and was recognised as an official language of New Zealand in 2006.
For many Deaf people, sign language is central to communication, identity, culture and connection. Yet communication barriers can still affect everyday experiences, including accessing healthcare, education, employment, public services, businesses and social environments.
These barriers are not necessarily created by a person's deafness. They can be created by environments that have not considered different ways of communicating.
Accessibility can therefore mean much more than having physical access to a building. It can mean being able to communicate with someone, understand what is happening, ask questions, express needs, receive important information and participate in decisions about your own life.
It is also important not to assume that every Deaf person communicates in exactly the same way. People have different communication preferences, experiences and needs. Some may use NZSL, some may communicate through speech or writing, and some may use a combination of different methods and technologies.
The most respectful approach is often a simple one: ask the person what works best for them and listen to the answer.
Communication is a fundamental part of human connection. Everyone deserves to be able to communicate in ways that allow them to be understood, respected and included.
At Blind-Betty-Ora, I believe inclusive wellness means thinking about the whole experience of a person, including how they communicate, how they receive information and what they need to feel comfortable and safe.
Wellness without Barriers means making space for different ways of communicating and recognising that accessibility is not one-size-fits-all.
This International Day of Sign Languages, take a moment to learn something new about sign languages, Deaf culture and communication accessibility. A little understanding can help create a world where more people can participate without having to fight unnecessary barriers along the way.
WHY DOES THE SAME PRESSURE FEEL DIFFERENT IN DIFFERENT PARTS OF YOUR BODY?
Ever noticed that pressure that feels comfortable on your back can feel much stronger on your calves, feet, neck or another area?
That's because your body doesn't experience pressure uniformly.
Different areas have different sensory receptors, tissue structures and physical demands. Your nervous system processes all of that information, along with factors such as your position and how the area is being moved or loaded.
So the same amount of pressure can produce a very different sensation depending on where it is applied.
This is why a massage therapist shouldn't simply use one pressure level across your entire body.
Pressure needs to be appropriate for the area being treated, the purpose of the technique and the person receiving it.
Your feedback matters here too. If pressure feels good in one area but too strong somewhere else, say so. If something feels uncomfortable, that's useful information — not something you are expected to endure.
And stronger isn't automatically better.
A massage doesn't become more effective simply because more force is used. Appropriate pressure is the point.
At Blind-Betty-Ora, I adjust pressure throughout a treatment based on the area, the technique, your response and your feedback.
Your body doesn't experience pressure with one universal setting. Your massage shouldn't either.

If you’re blind or have low vision and enjoy theatre, here’s an upcoming accessible performance worth knowing about.
Tiri: Te Araroa, Woman Far Walking is an extraordinary production by Auckland Theatre Company, following the epic life of Tiri Mahana — a 186-year-old matriarch whose story spans from the signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi through to present-day Aotearoa.
