A tax expert is calling out the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) over its renewed crackdown on online sellers, saying the agency should redirect its efforts toward auditing corrupt politicians and contractors instead of targeting small online entrepreneurs.
Mon Abrea of the Asian Consulting Group said the BIR should “do its job” by holding accountable those responsible for the misuse of public funds. He noted that with trillions in government spending since 2017, greater scrutiny should be focused on corruption in public offices, not digital sellers.
This comes after the BIR said uncollected taxes from online businesses may have already reached billions of pesos.
The agency has since intensified monitoring of e-commerce platforms and now requires operators to impose a one-percent withholding tax on sellers to ensure compliance and prevent further revenue losses. | via Money Talks
