In a newly published, peer-reviewed study, our Research & Development team compared to an extract prepared from Host Defense® Lion’s Mane (Hericium erinaceus) mushroom mycelium and a commercially available fruiting body extract, analyzing differences in bioactive-compound profiles and biological activity on immune cells in-vitro. Rather than focusing on a single molecule, the study examined how the whole fungal system behaves—including beta-glucan structure and immune-modulating signaling pathways.

Using transcriptomic and protein-level analyses, the research identified distinct biological responses associated with Lion’s Mane mushroom mycelium compared to fruiting body extracts—underscoring the importance of fungal tissue type and preparation.

These findings reinforce a key concept in the field of mycology: different growth stages of the same species can express distinct characteristics. Studying cultivated mushroom mycelium under controlled conditions allows researchers to isolate, repeat, and better understand these differences with consistency.
