He's my companion when my son's not around and he's my son's companion when I'm not around.

Very friendly to all and likes running a lot but he doesn't have a sense of direction, so he gets lost when not secured. He has no sense of danger so he is vulnerable to dog bullies. I guess that's the consequence of being an indoor dog.

He likes riding a motorbike so he might approach a motorcycle similar to mine.

Last night, he was still wearing a green harness with a key chain attached bearing his name and a phone number. I was carrying a box so when I opened the door, I did not notice he went out of the house.

Zenki Adventures - Not just a pet

Zenki was given to me in June 2022 when he was only three months old. At the time, I thought he would make a good therapy dog for my bedridden mother. I even wondered if he was sickly because he rarely barked like other dogs. But despite being unusually quiet, he was energetic, playful, and always friendly — except toward mice. Within the first month I had him, he proudly hunted his first mouse.

And he truly became a good therapy dog. My mother loved watching him play. Every time Zenki finished bathing, my mother would ask me to bring him to her so he could dry and warm himself under the morning sun by her east-facing window. Those small moments became part of our daily life.

When my mother passed away a year later, the silence and emptiness she left behind were difficult to bear. Caring for her every day, though often exhausting, had become part of our routine and our purpose at home. After she was gone, the house suddenly felt hollow and lifeless.

Zenki then became my therapy dog.

In many ways, he helped fill part of the void my mother left behind. Taking care of him gave me something familiar to hold onto, a reminder of the care, love, and daily routines that once revolved around my mother. Somehow, having someone to look after still makes it feel as though a part of my mother’s spirit remains in the house.

Since then, Zenki has been with me in almost every endeavor and journey. His first long trip, when he was still only a few months old, was during the first Cordillera Mototourism event sometime in 2022. From there, he became a constant companion to me and my son, joining camping trips, reunions, even our BENECO rallies, and travels to Sagada and many other beautiful places. Together, we rode through Halsema Road and Kabayan Road, roads known not only for their breathtaking views but also for the memories we created along the way.

Zenki even attended my seminars and tour guiding classes. Honestly, he could probably become a good tour guide himself just by being cute and friendly. He joined my media coverages and almost every activity I attended, as long as pets were allowed.
He was also an attraction at the Pansigshan Artisans Village getting much attention from guests. People take photos of him and with him. If I hear people saying Hi! out loud, I know they are not for me but for this friendly mutt.

Sometimes I forget that he is “just a dog.” I talk to him as if he fully understands every word I say. And perhaps, in his own way, he truly does understand more than people think. He learned to use the bathroom for both peeing and pooping, which made taking care of him much easier. He has kept that habit as long as we do not leave him alone at home for too long.

I never expected that I would worry so much about a pet’s health. But when Zenki got Parvo, I ended up spending more money trying to save him than I had ever spent for my own health. That was when I realized how deeply attached I had already become to him. He was no longer simply a dog living in the house, he had become family.

Zenki is not simply a pet, he is a loyal companion and part of the family. In many ways, he and my son keep me grounded. Truthfully, they are among the reasons I no longer go out as often, saving me from wasting time and hundreds of pesos on drinking and unhealthy habits. Home became more meaningful because they were there waiting for me.

That is why the night Zenki disappeared has been especially painful. I actually went home that evening specifically to feed him before heading back out again to finish some errands. When I could no longer find him, it felt like losing a part of our home once again.
Today, I am appealing to everyone for help in bringing Zenki home. He may be a small dog to others, but to us, he is family, a companion through grief, healing, travels, and everyday life. We are still hoping that somehow, someone sees this and helps him find his way back to us.
