A powerful arm balance, Side Plank Pose — Vasisthasana challenges your ability to stay calm and focused. Its name comes from the Sanskrit word “Vasistha,” which literally means, “most excellent” or “best.” The word implies the spiritual contentment that those on the yogic path can attain. Many great yoga sages have been named “Vasistha.” Thus, the pose is also sometimes referred to as “Sage Pose".

Try this Downward Facing Dog Variation. It tests your balance, strength and flexibility all at the same time.
From your first class to your 100th, Downward Facing Dog is probably the pose you do most often. Downward facing dog is pretty much the poster pose for yoga. Even people who have never stepped barefoot across the threshold of a yoga class know enough to make downward dog jokes. The reason it has become the best known asana is that it's so important in contemporary practice.
It provides that all-important hamstring and calf stretch, acts as a transitional pose, can be a resting position (believe it!), and is a great strengthener for the arms, legs, and back in its own right. It may be the first pose you learn as you begin a yoga practice.

One of the most recognized yoga poses is Downward-Facing Dog —Adho Mukha Svanasana is a standing pose and mild inversion that builds strength while stretching the whole body. It’s named after the way dogs naturally stretch their entire bodies! Downward-Facing Dog (also sometimes called "Downward Dog" or just "Down Dog") is an essential component of Sun Salutations and is often done many times during a yoga class. It can be used as a transitional pose, a resting pose, and a strength-builder.
