The Philippine Nuclear Research Institute confirmed that radioactive material was detected in parts of a steel manufacturing plant in Tagoloan that was recently raided by authorities. Investigators reported elevated radiation levels in several areas of the facility, including warehouses and production sections, prompting immediate containment measures to reduce potential exposure risks.

According to authorities, the detected radioactive isotopes reportedly included uranium-238, thorium-228, and thorium-232. The PNRI stated that the radioactive contamination had already been contained within the site, but concerns remain regarding worker safety and the possible distribution of contaminated steel materials.

Investigators also alleged that some Filipino workers inside the facility lacked adequate protective equipment despite the hazardous conditions, while some foreign workers reportedly had more complete protective gear. Government agencies including the National Bureau of Investigation and the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission are continuing their investigation into the facility’s operations and possible regulatory violations.

In Nuclear Safety, radioactive contamination in industrial facilities is considered a serious issue because prolonged exposure to ionizing radiation can increase health risks depending on the type, intensity, and duration of exposure. Experts emphasize that radioactive materials used or encountered in industrial processes must be strictly regulated, monitored, and properly contained to protect workers, nearby communities, and the environment.

Authorities have also begun profiling displaced workers and conducting health assessments while investigations continue regarding the plant’s operations, ownership links, and the distribution of potentially affected materials.
