CONFESSION: In early June, my husband, a 40-year-old seafarer, traveled from our home in Davao to Manila for what we believed would be a routine medical exam to prepare for his next contract. I joined him soon after, wanting to support him through the process. From June 5th to June 15th, he underwent several tests to check his blood and kidney function. By mid-June, it was confirmed that his kidneys were severely damaged, and he had to start emergency dialysis right away. As a public school teacher in Davao, with a salary of only 25,000 pesos, this has been an incredibly challenging time for our family. We have three children, our oldest is 15, and our youngest is just 8, and the financial and emotional burden has been overwhelming. We now know that factors like diet, lack of exercise, and the stress of life at sea may have contributed to his condition. Sadly, is now unfit for medical clearance, marking the end of his seafaring career. We share our story as a reminder to all seafarers and overseas workers to prioritize their health and well-being. Through all of this, we hold on to hope and to each other, facing the future together as a family.

Get enough rest and manage stress whenever possible. If you have high blood pressure or diabetes, take your medication consistently and follow your doctor’s advice.
