⚰️ Why Is a Cemetery Basically Called a Sleeping Place?

Ever wondered where the word “cemetery” came from? Its original meaning is surprisingly peaceful.

The word cemetery traces back to the ancient Greek koimētērion, meaning “sleeping place” or “dormitory.”

The term reflected an early Christian understanding of death as a temporary sleep before resurrection.

Over time, the word entered English and came to mean a burial ground—the place we now call a cemetery.

So technically, one of the most solemn words in English has its roots in something we do every night: sleeping. 😴
