When a multi-level marketing (MLM) a.k.a. “Networking” business does not have a credible or functioning product, that is a clear red flag. The foundation of any sustainable business is the product or service it offers — something with genuine value that addresses a need, solves a problem, or improves people’s lives. If the focus of the MLM is disproportionately on recruitment and membership fees rather than on the sale and consumption of a legitimate product, then the model becomes questionable.
It is important to note that I am not a hater of the MLM system. In fact, many traditional businesses operate with incentive structures that are similar to MLM, rewarding performance, referrals, and team growth. In fact, I am also connected with a company that’s kinda MLM-ish, but with a legit working product. That’s aside from me being an Insurance Adviser with Pru Life U.K. — which by the way, also has a similar business system. This shows that I recognize the potential of the model when it is anchored on real value. What I do not condone are organizations that use the MLM framework to disguise weak, overpriced, or even non-existent products, parang yung mga baboy kuno ng Organico. My vegan brother didn’t quite know how to feel when the scheme was exposed as another scam. On one hand, he was relieved that no pigs were actually raised for slaughter. On the other hand, he felt disheartened that so many people were deceived—although a good number of them already had an idea it was too good to be true. Haha!
Without a viable product, an MLM can easily drift toward the characteristics of a pyramid scheme, where income depends almost entirely on recruitment rather than legitimate sales. This structure is unsustainable because once recruitment slows, the system collapses, leaving the majority of participants at a financial loss. A legitimate MLM, on the other hand, should stand on three pillars:
1. A product that people outside the network would still want to buy.
2. Pricing that is transparent and competitive compared to alternatives in the market.
3. Revenue that is primarily driven by product sales, not recruitment.
At the end of the day, a true business is defined by the value of its product or service. When that is absent or questionable, what remains is not entrepreneurship, but a scheme that will eventually crumble.
