*Acne Scars: How They Form and How to Treat Them*

*1. How acne scars form*
Acne scars happen when inflammation from moderate to severe acne damages the skin’s deeper layers.

- *Atrophic scars*: Most common. The skin loses collagen during healing, leaving depressed scars - icepick, boxcar, and rolling types.
- *Hypertrophic/Keloid scars*: Too much collagen during healing, causing raised scars.
- *Post-inflammatory changes*: Not true scars, but red or dark marks from inflammation that affect color and texture.

The severity depends on how deep the inflammation went, how long it lasted, and how the skin healed.

*2. In-clinic treatments to remodel scars*

You usually need a combination approach because different scars respond to different methods:

- *Subcision/Excision*: For deep, tethered scars. A small surgical technique cuts the fibrous bands pulling the skin down, releasing the scar so it can rise. Excision removes small icepick scars entirely.
- *Chemical peeling*:Used XD to remove damaged outer layers and trigger collagen remodeling. Good for texture and mild scarring.
