At the start of the year, we scan the calendar for holidays.
But in 2024, the anniversary of EDSA People Power was quietly removed from the list of non-working holidays, and continues to be so this year.
Remember 2008, under GMA, when the EDSA People Power Revolution holiday was three days long?
While the palace has released a statement that expresses “respect for the commemoration of the Edsa People Power Revolution” and the current president has offered “a hand of reconciliation,” some may see the removal of the holiday as a push to forget and revise history.
In 1986, the EDSA People Power included two million Filipino civilians, military, and religious groups who took to the streets in an exceptionally peaceful four-day rally that toppled the 14-year dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos Sr.
And with the peaceful revolution came the return of democracy.
Still, not everyone is moving on. Schools and activist groups are marking the day with rallies, tying yellow ribbons, and taking to the streets—because some things don’t just fade away.
And while younger generations seem to be forgetting the importance of this historic revolution, perhaps the removal of the non-working holiday has only drawn more attention to its importance—ultimately fueling the same reverence for that peaceful revolution again.

𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝟖𝟖 𝐆𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬, 𝐂𝐞𝐛𝐮 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐲!
From a vision to now a reality, Cebu City has stood strong as the Queen City of the South, a place where its heritage and history blends seamlessly with progress and innovation. For 88 long years, this very city continuously flourished and emerged as the center for trade and development altogether.
This day, we celebrate and pay tribute to every Sugbuanon’s resilience, dedication, and their unwavering spirit who became the sole driving force in the progress of our dear Sugbo. As we commemorate this day, may we hold our city’s humble beginning dearly and move forward united, guided by a shared vision of growth, innovation, and prosperity.
Let us be proud of our past, honor our present, and march into the future with hope and ambition. Padayon, Sugbo!
