🌫️ NASA: Smoke from Indonesia fires blankets parts of Southeast Asia
Smoke from widespread fires in Indonesia has spread across parts of Indonesia and Malaysia, with satellite imagery showing a large plume of haze on September 1.
According to NASA Earth, Indonesia is experiencing a severe and widespread drought, fueling fires both above ground and underground. Some are burning in tropical peatlands, which can smolder for long periods, produce significant air pollution, and are notoriously difficult to extinguish.
🔥 NASA’s Aqua satellite detected numerous fire hotspots across Indonesia, shown as red dots in the satellite image.
For Cebu and other parts of the Visayas, the development is a reminder of how air quality can be affected by conditions beyond local borders. Haze from Indonesia has also been reported reaching parts of the Philippines, carried by prevailing winds and the southwest monsoon.
🌬️ As haze conditions develop, residents are advised to stay informed about local air-quality advisories and limit prolonged outdoor exposure when air quality deteriorates.

🚨 PUBLIC ADVISORY | Cebu City
WATCH: This video was taken this afternoon showing a portion of a road in Cebu City blanketed in haze.
Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival has ordered the temporary suspension of face-to-face classes in all public and private schools starting 2 p.m. today, September 2, until September 3, 2026, amid hazardous air quality caused by transboundary haze.
The advisory comes as the Environmental Management Bureau Region VII (EMB-7) reported an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 208 as of 11 a.m., classified as “Acutely Unhealthy.” At this level, the risk of respiratory irritation and other health complications is significantly increased for everyone, while sensitive groups may experience more severe effects.
With the Habagat (Southwest Monsoon) potentially sustaining the haze over Metro Cebu, the city government said significant improvement in air quality is not expected in the immediate period.
📚 For schools: Face-to-face classes at all levels in public and private schools are suspended, with schools to shift to modular distance learning, asynchronous classes and other appropriate flexible learning modalities.
💼 For businesses and offices: Private companies and institutions are strongly encouraged to adopt work-from-home or remote arrangements for office-based personnel where operationally feasible.
👷 For outdoor workers: Employers are encouraged to provide N95 or KN95 masks, limit prolonged outdoor exposure, provide breaks in clean or air-filtered areas, and protect employees who are particularly vulnerable to air pollution.
🏠 Residents are advised to:
• Stay indoors as much as possible
• Keep doors and windows closed when outdoor air quality is poor
• Wear an N95 or KN95 mask if going outdoors is unavoidable
• Avoid strenuous outdoor activities
• Exercise extra caution if particularly vulnerable to air pollution
The DENR-EMB 7 continues to closely monitor ambient air quality to assess the presence, extent and potential health impacts of the haze across the region.
📍 Stay updated through official air quality advisories and protect yourself and your loved ones while hazardous conditions persist.
Stay safe, Cebu City!
