Today, we commemorate the 10th anniversary of the landmark 2016 Arbitral Award on the South China Sea.

As a staunch defender of international law, Germany reaffirms the global legal force of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea ( ), which governs all activities in our oceans. The 2016 arbitral ruling remains final and legally binding on all parties. It serves as an essential framework for maintaining peace, maritime security, and the freedom of navigation and overflight in the region.

Germany, alongside its international partners like the Philippines, continues to advocate for the peaceful resolution of maritime disputes through open dialogue and adherence to established global rules. Let’s keep the oceans free, safe, and governed by law.
