A 2016 study by an international team of scientists, including researchers from the Institute of Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine in India, analyzed protein crystals found in the midgut of the Pacific beetle cockroach (Diploptera punctata). They discovered that these crystals are exceptionally nutrient-dense, containing proteins, fats, and sugars, and provide more than three times the energy of an equivalent amount of buffalo milk, which itself has higher calories than cow’s milk.
The study also highlighted that these protein crystals release nutrients in a time-released manner during digestion, offering a sustained energy source. However, practical consumption of cockroach milk is currently unfeasible due to challenges in extraction and production. Researchers are exploring methods to replicate these protein crystals in the lab to potentially develop them as a protein supplement in the future.
