The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) expects the trial results on the efficacy of virgin coconut oil (VCO) against the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) to be released on the second week of November.

“After today ay ia-analyze na 'yung data. Siguro second week of November alam na natin kung ano ang finding,” DOST Secretary Fortunato dela Peña said in a news interview on Saturday, October 17.

The agency earlier aimed to have 45 participating patients to hav VCO mixed into their meals, and another 45 without the coconut oil in order for researchers to compare results.

“Ang hope natin ay yung mga napabilis ang paggaling ay 'yun nga ang binigyan ng VCO at saka wala naman siyang harmful effects," Dela Peña said.

Early on, the DOST aimed to have 45 participating patients who will have virgin coconut oil mixed into their meals, and another 45 without VCO in order for researchers to compare results.

"Ang hope natin ay yung mga napabilis ang paggaling ay 'yun nga ang binigyan ng VCO," Dela Peña said.

"At saka wala naman siyang harmful effects," he added.

Meanwhile, the DOST secretary also reported that admission of severe COVID-19 cases at the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) had declined amid the ongoing trials of lagundi as a supplemental treatment.

“'Yung mga severe cases sa PGH parang dumadalang ang admission. Kahapon isa lang 'yung kanilang kinausap, hindi pa nag-volunteer,” he explained.

On June 3, the PGH ethics board of the University of the Philippines-Manila (UPM) approved to include some COVID-19 patients in clinical trials for VCO.

On October 9, the DOST announced that clinical trials for lagundi as a medicine to prevent severe COVID-19 cases has started.
