“MADALI KA NA LANG MAKAKUHA NG TRABAHO DAHIL CUM LAUDE KA NAMAN…”
What if graduating with honors is not the golden ticket everyone says it is? All my life, I heard it from relatives, strangers, and friends:
“Madali ka na lang makakuha ng trabaho dahil cm laude ka naman.” They said it with so much confidence that I believed it, too. But after graduation, life showed me a different story.
Not long after receiving my diploma, I lost my grandmother. The excitement I felt on stage quickly turned into grief at home. I didn’t look for work right away. I needed time to heal. A month later, I went to Manila, carrying both my hopes and my degree, ready to start my career.
I did find a job, but it was not related to my course. Still, I accepted it. Practical sa buhay, sometimes you take what’s available while waiting for the right job. For months, I worked hard, but one day, the company decided to let me go because of internal changes.
I went back to job hunting, sending applications, and attending interviews. That’s when I started hearing the same thing over and over: “You’re overqualified.” Some even added, “Ow, Cum Laude ka pala, tiyak hindi ka magtatagal sa company dahil maraming doors na mag-o-open sa ’yo, at pagdating nun, iiwan mo rin ang company.”
They would say it half-jokingly, but I could tell they meant it. I always wondered why they thought that way. How could they already assume I would leave, when all I wanted was a stable job where I could learn and grow?
I barely had work experience — only the knowledge and skills I worked hard for in school. Yet somehow, my degree felt less like an achievement and more like a label that pushed opportunities away. Was my academic record now a barrier instead of a bridge?
I kept applying, hoping that the next interview would be different. But each rejection felt heavier than the last, and the costs of staying in the city kept piling up. Weeks turned into months, and my savings slowly disappeared. Rent, food, transportation, and the daily expenses of job hunting added up until I was left counting the last bills in my wallet. With no job and no money left, I had no choice but to return to the province.
I thought I would stay for only a short time, but now it has been eight months without a job. The pressure is constant, from relatives asking about my plans, from friends sharing their career updates, and from my own mind asking if I am falling behind.
Still, I try. I tell employers I am willing to start at the bottom, to learn, to prove myself. I just need one chance. Being a cm laude graduate does not mean I expect special treatment. It means I worked hard before, and I am ready to work hard again.
To every employer reading this, I hope you see beyond the grades. See the determination, the willingness to grow, and the person behind the paper. And to anyone who feels stuck like me, you are not alone. Keep going.
