The 5 stages of water filtration:

-Sedimentation
The water and flocs are pumped into sedimentation basins. Here, the flocs settle beneath the water so that they can be removed. About 85 to 90 percent of the suspended particles responsible for turbidity are removed at this point, including large amounts, but not all, of the bacteria.

-Filtration
In filtration, the water flows through a multilayer medium such as quartz sand, activated carbon or anthracite coal in order to remove up to 99.5 percent of the solid materials remaining in it, whether flocs, microbes or minerals. This step usually is the last one in the process of removing solids from the water.

-Disinfection
Disinfection kills off disease-bearing organisms in the water. Most water treatment plants use chemicals, generally chlorine compounds, as disinfectants. Although chlorine is still one of the most common disinfectants, ultraviolet radiation and ozone gas are becoming more widespread. Chlorine is increasing in cost and has some known toxic effects on humans and fish. In addition, some disease-carrying microbes like Giardia and Cryptosporidium resist chlorine.

-Corrosion & Scale Control
The pH is a measurement of electrically charged particles in a substance. It indicates how acidic or alkaline (basic) that substance is. The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14:

>Acidic water has a pH lower than 7. The most acidic substances have a pH of 0. Battery acid falls into this category.
>Alkaline water has a pH of 8 or above. The most alkaline substances, such as lye, have a pH of 14.
>Pure water has a pH of 7 and is considered “neutral” because it has neither acidic nor basic qualities.

-Taste & Odor Control
Unpleasant tastes and odors remaining in the water, such as those from algae, often do not pose any health hazards. Yet consumers prefer to do without them. So water purification plants often remove tastes and odors through additional chemical treatment, ozonation or filtration. At this stage, some municipalities also require the addition of fluoride to the water for dental health.

What Makes Alkaline Water Different?

Water is a combination of hydrogen and oxygen. That's why you call it H2O. Water’s pH level determines how acidic it is and ranges from 0 to 14. A pH of 7 is considered neutral. That “seven” number is considered neutral or balanced between acidic and alkaline. If water is below 7 on the pH scale, it's "acidic." If it's higher than 7, it's "alkaline."

EPA guidelines state that the pH of tap water should be between 6.5 and 8.5. Still, tap water in the U.S. tends to fall below that -- in the 4.3 to 5.3 range -- depending on where you live.

Bottled water falls under different standards depending on whether it claims to be alkaline. Bottled alkaline water has a pH level above 7. In some cases, manufacturers use a special device to change the chemical makeup of the water. Other times, they add nutrients to the water to change its pH.

For comparison, orange juice has a pH of 3.3 and black coffee is about a 5. Pure water has a neutral pH of 7. But tap water in the U.S. tends to fall below that -- in the 4.3 to 5.3 range -- depending on where you live.

Checking the Health Claims
Alkaline water enthusiasts claim that its increased hydrogen provides greater hydration than regular water, especially after a hard workout.

Fans of the stuff also say that regular drinking water with a pH below 7 creates too much acid in your blood and cells. They blame plain water's low pH for all sorts of health problems, from osteoporosis to cancer.

Water that is more alkaline supposedly reduces acid in the bloodstream and:

Backers of high-pH water say it also has the power to starve cancer cells.

pH Level and Your Skin
It's a little known fact that unbalanced pH levels can trigger acne and cause existing breakouts to last longer. When this balance is disrupted, body acidity increases, immunity is reduced, and acne bacteria flourish. Did you know that when people say "a bad diet can cause acne" they are actually referring to the detrimental effect of an acidic pH level

What is the science behind pH levels? ​​
​The letters pH stand for the abbreviation “potential hydrogen”, or the measure of hydrogen-ions in a solution. In this case, the “solution” is your blood, and your pH level would be the amount of oxygen present within. For optimal health and skin condition, the pH level should stay balanced in the range of 7.0 – 10.

A pH reading that lands in higher numbers on the chart below (from 7.0-10) is considered alkaline, and is rich in oxygen. A reading that lands from 6.5-4.5 is acidic and oxygen-deprived. For optimal health, human blood should remain at a level between 7.0-10. Once below that level, the body becomes riddled with disease.

Why is it important to have a balanced pH level? ​
Bacteria, viruses, and cancer feed on acid, which is a byproduct of sugar. If your body is highly acidic, the more likely it is to succumb to illness and bacteria overload. This includes acne bacteria overload! Those who are commonly hits with colds, flu and bronchitis often have bad eating habits, and an exceptionally acidic pH level.
What foods help create optimal pH level? ​
Example #1 – Bad diet = High acidity
Say a person eats the following diet daily, for one week: Pancakes, sweetened coffee, grilled cheese, soda, spaghetti, sourdough bread and beer. At the end of the week, their pH level would probably be around 5.0-5.5 (very acidic). They would be very prone to illness and acne breakouts. Processed foods, refined white starches, alcohol and refined sugar all cause high acidity in the blood. This in turn leads to body-wide inflammation.
